Make copies, preserve them, create a parallel black list, hide this list. Deleting research from databases or from being found renders knowledge as good as non-existent.

I love libraries and archives and museums. To read about the history of work to maintain libraries and share histories I suggest you skip my piece and just go buy this book (or! request it at your local library!) but if you need to be convinced, here: lareviewofbooks.org/article/blac...

This post by a former NARA employee is good, outlining some of its powers and responsibilities. I knew that NARA administered the Electoral College. There’s a lot of similarly important stuff. It will *not be good* for the next Archivist of the United States to be a Trump stooge.

"When Overwhelmed Archivist enters the battlefield..."
RPG card for 'Overwhelmed Archivist. Creature - Human Wizard'. It includes an image of a middle aged, bearded white man in chunky futuristic armour, sitting at a desk lit by some sort of electrical / lava lamp things. A severed hand in a jar of liquid is on the desk. This is unusual in an archive and might be better in a museum collection. The Overwhelmed Archivist is quoted as saying "Bah! As if I had time to preserve everything", suggesting that he needs to spend more time on appraisal and less on accumulating random body parts.

There's something here about the way "middle class white women, amirite" has become such an all purpose clapback on social media that *even a rich middle class white man accused of sexual misconduct* now thinks it'll work as a defence, I think?

Today I gave one of my favourite but most difficult lectures of the year; ‘records of life and death’… which leads into memory and the archive. Every time I am in the office, I walk past this. It is a remembrance of members of the University community who have died recently.
A tall university building in the background, with a low wall and a seat / bench in the foreground. This will be shown in more detail in the next pictures.
It is dark with lights on in the buildings and streetlights, with a couple of trees against the sky.A slightly closer view of the concrete wall and bench. We can see writing on the wall.A closer view of writing on the wall. It reads:
Sun Guihua
Dr Johanna Green
Professor James Milner-White
Mr Joseph Russo MA (Hons)
Rev Stuart Dougall MacQuarrie MPhil MBA
Mr David 'Biggs' Wright
Professor Peter Swithin Meadows, FRSB, FLS, FRGS
Mr Terry M Millar MICWCI

The wall is a pale grey. The writing is dark. I don’t know how it was added, but it looks as if it is intended to fade over time.

I've been having some amazing conversations about this lately. As an archivist I have to process a lot of material that I would rather not see or that is immensely emotional, and then I apply content warnings and closures as appropriate so that researchers aren't 'surprised'. It can be gruelling.
