Make copies, preserve them, create a parallel black list, hide this list. Deleting research from databases or from being found renders knowledge as good as non-existent.

That sounds like simultaneously a lot - because it will take such a load off and be such a relief… _and_ not a lot at all because it will only help with a small part of the load you are currently carrying. Take care, and enjoy breathing.

This post by a former NARA employee is good, outlining some of its powers and responsibilities. I knew that NARA administered the Electoral College. There’s a lot of similarly important stuff. It will *not be good* for the next Archivist of the United States to be a Trump stooge.

"When Overwhelmed Archivist enters the battlefield..."
RPG card for 'Overwhelmed Archivist. Creature - Human Wizard'. It includes an image of a middle aged, bearded white man in chunky futuristic armour, sitting at a desk lit by some sort of electrical / lava lamp things. A severed hand in a jar of liquid is on the desk. This is unusual in an archive and might be better in a museum collection. The Overwhelmed Archivist is quoted as saying "Bah! As if I had time to preserve everything", suggesting that he needs to spend more time on appraisal and less on accumulating random body parts.

Today I gave one of my favourite but most difficult lectures of the year; ‘records of life and death’… which leads into memory and the archive. Every time I am in the office, I walk past this. It is a remembrance of members of the University community who have died recently.
A tall university building in the background, with a low wall and a seat / bench in the foreground. This will be shown in more detail in the next pictures.
It is dark with lights on in the buildings and streetlights, with a couple of trees against the sky.A slightly closer view of the concrete wall and bench. We can see writing on the wall.A closer view of writing on the wall. It reads:
Sun Guihua
Dr Johanna Green
Professor James Milner-White
Mr Joseph Russo MA (Hons)
Rev Stuart Dougall MacQuarrie MPhil MBA
Mr David 'Biggs' Wright
Professor Peter Swithin Meadows, FRSB, FLS, FRGS
Mr Terry M Millar MICWCI

The wall is a pale grey. The writing is dark. I don’t know how it was added, but it looks as if it is intended to fade over time.

I've been having some amazing conversations about this lately. As an archivist I have to process a lot of material that I would rather not see or that is immensely emotional, and then I apply content warnings and closures as appropriate so that researchers aren't 'surprised'. It can be gruelling.

It was on my ‘to be read’ shelf for quite a while. And then I read it slowly over a few weeks. That was right for me, but I can also see a v quick read at first would also have been good. It is a perfect mix of professional and personal. You’ll get to it when the time is right for you.

Well, thank you for writing it! I usually have a book on the go to read slowly when my daughter is in her music lessons. I am glad I read it slowly (a chapter or two at a time, over a few weeks). There was a lot to think about. I am sorry for your loss, but glad your dad had a good death.

I want to revisit this book now. What can we do to help those we love navigate their own, individual, end of life experience? What can we do to make this easier for them? And what can we take from doing this to help ourselves too, in the future?
