More from Kingdom of the East Angles, a Holga film project: Shingle Foam, Dunwich, 2026 www.hawkins-weeks.com/portfolio/ki... #photography #landscape #BlackAndWhite #film #holga #BelieveInFilm #ECK
A black and white, square-crop photograph captures waves crashing onto a dark, pebbly shoreline under a heavy, overcast sky. The image has a grainy texture, with prominent dark circular spots scattered across the upper portion, resembling a vintage pinhole camera effect or film defects. The shoreline extends from the bottom left corner diagonally towards the distant upper right, where the land meets the horizon line. White foam from a receding wave dominates the lower right foreground, its edge cutting sharply against the dark pebbles. The sea stretches out to the right, showing slight texture from waves further out.

Feeling rather nostalgic this evening as my daughter moves back to university to start her postgraduate degree in literature. As I sit here going through my archive, I remember this photo taken on one of our holidays in the Lake District. So many memories as time passes 🖤

Roman Vishniac. Modernist yet romantic, monumental, sociological yet playful, his work imbibes of the music of people and place, portraying the rituals of an old society about to be swept away by the maelstrom of war.
