Postdoc @ Emory Univ. The Deans lab is recruiting postdocs to work on inner ear development, hair cells and innervation. We use mouse genetics, imaging, and dev bio to understand how the machinery for hearing + balance is built. Email a CV and brief statement of interests. 🔁 Boosts appreciated

I really hate it when a vendor or sales rep asks to know my budget before giving us a quote. My budget is as low as possible - haven’t you read anything about the NIH lately?

Now that my lab has moved to Emory I want you to join us in Atlanta. We have an NIH-funded postdoc position available to study Planar Cell Polarity (PCP) signaling using vestibular hair cells of the mouse as a model. Please repost and/or DM for details

We have to do a better job writing the Project Narrative and Project Summary sections of our grants. Now more than ever these need to be clear and compelling - and written for the general public. I’m afraid these are the only sections RFK jr and friends might read when judging your worth. 😐

Happy #FluorescenceFriday. I captured this one myself.
A field of vestibular hair cells from the mouse utricle showing stereociliary bundles and adherens junctions marked by phalloidin (green) and the basal body beneath the kinocilia of hair cells and the primary cilia of supporting cells immunolabeled for Pericentrin (magenta).

These hair cells are divided between two groups with opposite planar polarities. Hair cells at the top of the image have the opposite orientation from those on the bottom. You can tell by the position of their basal body and stereociliary bundle.

For our first #FluorescenceFriday post I’m sharing a lab favorite. Photo credit to Ellie Goodrich.
An isolated mouse saccule showing vestibular hair cells immunolabeled for Spectrin (green) and the Cre-labeled lineage of cells expressing the transcription factor Emx2 (magenta).

These hair cells are divided between two groups with opposite planar polarities that is determined by their Emx2 lineage. Also labeled but rarely discussed are the Emx2-expressing epithelial cells of the saccule roof (partially resected to show the hair cells beneath).

Today’s poem celebrates Fibonacci Day. It’s called ‘Word Crunching’.
Word Crunching

I
wrote
a poem
on a page
but then each line grew
to the word sum of the previous two
until I began to worry about all these words coming with such frequency
because as you can see, it can be easy to run out of space when a poem gets all Fibonacci sequency

For many junior faculty who’ve received the advice to submit a modular R01 (I did, when I was starting my lab), do NOT heed this advice. I ran my lab on $180k per yr for 5 yrs, since of course the institute cuts the budget down further, and it was painful.
