Postdoc @ Emory Univ. The Deans lab is recruiting postdocs to work on inner ear development, hair cells and innervation. We use mouse genetics, imaging, and dev bio to understand how the machinery for hearing + balance is built. Email a CV and brief statement of interests. 🔁 Boosts appreciated
Fluorescent image of a mouse organ of Corti. Teal and pink labeling shows N-cadherin and E-cadherin in the inner and outer compartments respectively. Yellow labels the hair cells and their stereociliary bundles.

Contact me about postdoc opportunities related to this work!

To have this paper appear the same day that RFK Jr is canceling all mRNA vaccine funding is further indication that irony is not dead, even though we might all be soon.

Hope so - I tried this last week but PubMed Central wouldn’t let me change the embargo period - 12 months was the only option

Another congratulations to Shubham Kale whose paper about cochlear development and innervation just came out in Developmental Biology. See the details in person here: www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

We have to do a better job writing the Project Narrative and Project Summary sections of our grants. Now more than ever these need to be clear and compelling - and written for the general public. I’m afraid these are the only sections RFK jr and friends might read when judging your worth. 😐

Our contribution to #FluorescenceFriday is a progress report. The scope made it to Emory and was reassembled with only one minor catastrophe. We’re calling it a win.

Happy #FluorescenceFriday. I captured this one myself.
A field of vestibular hair cells from the mouse utricle showing stereociliary bundles and adherens junctions marked by phalloidin (green) and the basal body beneath the kinocilia of hair cells and the primary cilia of supporting cells immunolabeled for Pericentrin (magenta).

These hair cells are divided between two groups with opposite planar polarities. Hair cells at the top of the image have the opposite orientation from those on the bottom. You can tell by the position of their basal body and stereociliary bundle.

For our first #FluorescenceFriday post I’m sharing a lab favorite. Photo credit to Ellie Goodrich.
An isolated mouse saccule showing vestibular hair cells immunolabeled for Spectrin (green) and the Cre-labeled lineage of cells expressing the transcription factor Emx2 (magenta).

These hair cells are divided between two groups with opposite planar polarities that is determined by their Emx2 lineage. Also labeled but rarely discussed are the Emx2-expressing epithelial cells of the saccule roof (partially resected to show the hair cells beneath).
