Battle Royale

The boy has always been there.
I say to the boy, I think it's time.
The boy turns away
and continues playing with his blocks.
I go up to him and take away the helicopter he is building
and crash it. The boy scrambles and picks up
the little blocks. I sit next to him for a while
and help him build something new.
It is not a helicopter. It is a castle.
The boy walks in and locks its gate.
From the top of a watchtower the boy motions
for me to build my helicopter
and fly over the wall.
I look around and there aren't enough blocks.
The boy won't open the gate.
He wants someone who can build a helicopter.
I don't know how to fly one.

The nation is broken, but hills and rivers remain. Du Fu, trans. Arthur Sze
Du Fu, trans. Arthur Sze, full poem text below

Spring View

The nation is broken, but hills and rivers remain.
Spring is in the city, grasses and trees are thick.
Touched by the hard times, flowers shed tears.
Grieved by separations, birds are startled in their hearts.

The beacon fires burned for three consecutive months.
A letter from home would be worth ten thousand pieces of gold.
As I scratch my white head, the hairs become ewer: so scarce that I try in vain to fasten them with a pin.

For #smallpoemsunday and @tomsnarsky.bsky.social a new poem for 2026 – 'Even after grace'. Thank you so much for reading 🩶 #poetrycommunity #WritingCommunity
Even after grace

I’ll still worry as the bread leavens.
Reprieve, but less teeth for the banquet.

Who doesn’t want the wine of dissolution?
Its feathers lately blue on the roof

as we thrum through sheets of rain?
For music at the wings to acquit

the body’s dull current.
What strikes twice on faces like this?

Despite a cross, the chapel the realtor
trades in broad daylight.

Its one jaded window
where you vacate me like a wave.

If you liked "One Battle After Another," then may I recommend...
Black-and-white cover of Matewan from The Criterion Collection. A man in a hat and suit stands in the foreground, his back to the viewer, holding a gun at his side. Ahead of him, a group of men in hats and dark suits stand on a railroad track in the distance, facing him through a haze of light and smoke. The large, bold title “MATEWAN” spans the lower half of the image, with smaller text reading “Written and directed by John Sayles.” The left border notes “1987 · The Criterion Collection.” The overall mood is tense and cinematic, evoking an impending confrontation.

Happy pub day to poet Yoo Heekyung and translator Stine An—Today’s Morning Vocabulary is out today from ZephyrPress. Dive into this quietly luminous collection in this thread. (www.zephyrpress.org/product-page...)
Book cover for “Today’s Morning Vocabulary” (오늘 아침 단어) by Yoo Heekyung, translated from Korean by Stine An. The design is in soft black‑and‑white: diffused window light fills the background while the dark silhouette of a leafy plant stretches across the lower right. The English title appears in crisp white sans‑serif lettering near the upper left; the Korean title sits beneath it in elegant Hangul script. The author’s name and translator credit are positioned in the lower right, both in white text, creating a minimalist, contemplative mood.

In "Janus," Poet Oh Eun distills his wit and existential unease into a deceptively quiet meditation on survival. Known for pushing the aesthetic of linguistic play to bold extremes in Korean poetry, Oh Eun pairs his surreal sensibility with a sharpened clarity.

Poet Kim Min Jeong jump‑ropes across the grotesque with a child‑bright grin. In her collection 날으는 고슴도치 아가씨 (Flying Hedgehog Lady), fairy‑tale whimsy collides with self‑cannibal joy and mirror‑shard despair. Step into her dazzling, skewed zoo in the attached poem.
