There’s no getting around the fact that there are going to be significant supply shortages the next couple of months. Major publishers tend to say this every year, but we reckon it may be on par with what we experienced in 2020.

You’ll be happy to know (I think) that tonight I crashed (accidentally, I promise!) a bookseller dinner for a hugely bestselling author. Congrats to you if you find the signed copy of her novel in our store.

Meanwhile B&N is buying up large independent bookstores staggered by the size they at some point assumed was necessary to survive. Publisher consolidation has lulled a bit, but likely but for a moment. Distribution consolidation continues apace.

Unsure if it was in the interest of legibility or laziness, but typed up a shelftalker for Gabe Bullard's AGAINST CONVENIENCE. ebbooksellers.com/item/44euZQq...
Against Convenience
Gabe Bullard

If you’re reading this little card you’re in a bookstore. Indeed, you are very likely in a bookstore (ours!) that does not simply tolerate, but welcomes – and, if we’re being honest – is prone to create a little friction! Just a little, though; just enough to create a memory, but preferably not so much that it sends you to some silly website and give us a 1-star review (“only because I couldn’t give them 0!”).

Anyway, Gabe Bullard’s very fine book articulates at least one part of why we’re this way. Actually more, but I’m trying to keep this short. It offers no solutions, blessedly. But it it does till the earth, so to speak, for why there need to be places like this silly bookstore of ours and perhaps not so silly customers like you.

Literary fiction is coming. It is going to revolutionize the economy. We know that China has already got a start on literary fiction. We can’t afford to be left out of the literary fiction economy. Think of your kids. They might already be engaging with literary fiction.

What a great time we had at the @oaklandreviewofbooks.org launch party night at Eli's Mile High Club. "Always be launching," is the cheeky saying they've adopted, which we love. It's the lyrical embodiment of "vibes," in general and theirs specifically.

New newsletter is in the wild (or your email, if you subscribe)! A bit of a ramble, event links, & books that are hard to categorize. Recognizably us, I suppose. us16.campaign-archive.com?u=a0d5650803...
I know that's a lot to dump into store email. The TLDR version is this: we all have our reasons for writing and/or even browsing this far down a store newsletter; and none quite fit the narrative sold to us by the artificial engines of industry and whatever passes for governance these days. When I toasted our re-opening back in 2024, I raised a cheeky glass to obsolescence. I now think that flirts too much with irony. It threatens to diminish the decisions that we all insist on making, especially at a time when some would prefer we have as few choices as possible.

Another anniversary of the fire passed yesterday. It's funny, we now don't think about it all that much. Far less than many customers, in fact. The human brain, given time, is inclined, to a point, to heal. Resolve and general stubbornness may yet be some of the greatest tools in our toolkit.

By far the funniest moment in Homer’s Odyssey is when Circe says, “Shall we have sex?” and Odysseus says, “You just turned all my men into pigs. You have the GALL to think I would sleep with you? Of course I will. Absolutely. But don’t do any weird spells”
photograph of the relevant passage in Fitzgerald's translation of the Odyssey ("I make no bed of love with you upon it. Or swear me first a great oath, if I do, you'll work no more enchantment to my harm.")
