the way I think about it is that a slice is a texture, where the drawn intensity relates to the underlying signal intensity in a manner sufficient for me to make quantitative judgments about my data. hopefully that's what yall are going to ship!

AITA for correcting my girlfriend's family every time they mispronounce my turtle's name?
I have a turtle named Geoff. Yes I know Geoff is normally pronounced Jeff. His isnt. My girlfriend's family knows this and still calls him Jeff basically every time his name comes up.
His name starts with /dz/ instead of the normal American English J sound /d3/. So regular Geoff/Jeff is roughly /dzef/ and his is /dzef/. They are similar but they are NOT the same consonant. /d3/ is a voiced postalveolar affricate and /dz/ is a voiced retroflex affricate. Basically you make the beginning of "Jeff" with the tongue farther back/retracted, which gives it a harder, deeper "dzh" sound.
I'm really into etymology and historical linguistics so the spelling was intentional too. Geoff is already a weird spelling from a modern English perspective because gives you basically no reason to predict /dzef/ unless you already know the name. Obviously I am NOT claiming medieval Geoffrey was pronounced / dzef/. I

We functionally pay violent drivers over $1 trillion per year in subsidies so they can kill and horrifically maim millions of Americans per year. That's the medical/loss of life/disability cost *paid by victims and society* for letting drivers drive violently. All so they can have cheap insurance.

lol at what it takes to build the 13M-line Lean proof of Fermat's Last Theorem github.com/anthropics/f...

Check it yourself

You need Linux or macOS (some paths are too long for Windows), elan (it installs Lean 4.33.1 from lean-toolchain), and a network connection: Lake fetches Mathlib from GitHub and compiles it from source, since no prebuilt Mathlib matches this toolchain (about 13 minutes at 96 jobs).
The build needs about 5 GB of memory per parallel job (a few modules need up to 36 GB); about 67 GB of disk under .lake/, plus C files (about 220 GB) that can be deleted as the build goes. Ours took 5 h 32 min at 96 jobs, with a peak of 153 GB of memory.
comparator takes about 15 hours (ours: 14 h 46 min), nearly all of it the kernel replay on one core. Our peak memory was 230 GB, so allow 300 GB. Run nanoda after the comparator script, whose tools it reuses. Writing the 37.8 GB export takes about 90 GB of memory for an hour, and the check itself about 40 GB (about 30 minutes at 16 threads). Both scripts are for Linux (bash, git, python3, GNU coreutils; nanoda also needs patch, cargo and crates.io).

just learned about the guy that played Go so hard he died
A highlight of Edo Go history was a match hosted by the Matsudaira family in 1840, where he counterattacked Inseki's prized disciple, Akaboshi Intetsu (sent as a challenger), with a series of brilliant tetsujis. The game took a week to play and was so intense that Akaboshi collapsed from exhaustion and vomited blood, dying shortly after.[6] This incident made this match famous in Go history, and it is now called the blood-vomiting game.

pixi 0.76 can now run standalone python scripts in isolated, on-demand environments. dependencies live inline via PEP 723, like uv supports, but pixi can layer on conda and system dependencies too. fun to build this with @prefix.dev folks. coming to a @marimo.io notebook near you SOON.
