Senate candidates run on raising Social Security taxes for higher incomes to prevent benefit cuts
Social Security is projected to dip into insolvency and force a 22% benefit cut in 2032, or less than six years, meaning the class of senators elected this year will have to address the issue.

It's telling that men would rather try to invent tech to replace humans' role in caregiving than step up as equal partners in parenting. Telling, that is, in that it shows how financial capitalism and patriarchy work together to dissuade men from doing "unprofitable" labor, like the work of care.

Famously, someone in the last year claimed a proof of the Collatz conjecture verified in Lean, which turned out to be wrong.

David Jekel @davidjekel.myatproto.social · 8h
It has also sometimes happened that an auto-generated Lean proof based on a natural language proof ends up formalizing the *wrong* statement, so that the Lean proof doesn’t actually prove the thing they want.

David Jekel @davidjekel.myatproto.social · 8h
The paper claims that the natural language version of the proof has errors, while the Lean version might be correct. It indicates that the natural language and Lean statements within the paper don’t match.

All mathematical areas need new frameworks and they have to decide which problems are interesting. OpenAI doesn’t have sufficient experts to understand the content they generate. Some mathematicians were overly fixated on solving specific conjectures, but we know we need a bigger vision

Mathematicians will take a while to digest them, and find the next steps. Finally having answers to some problems we were stuck on for a long time allows us to move on to new things.

OpenAI could have easily prompted their models to search for similar models in the literature and cite them. They did not, and they have been warned about the lack of citations multiple times. The results need to be integrated into the past and future of math.

David Jekel @davidjekel.myatproto.social · 22h
There are several other citations that should be added. This negative answer to the problem is what I expected, and so I have worked on a framework to go beyond the original chi*, at the same time as trying to understand their example within a bigger picture.

David Jekel @davidjekel.myatproto.social · 22h
The release of new OpenAI-generated results is a mixed bag. In particular, this result on free entropy chi versus chi* is my exact topic. I read the example and the setup is something similar to my own work. It is still novel and relatively short but also badly written in many ways.

The Māori octopus (Macroctopus maorum) is one of the largest octopus species found in New Zealand and Australian waters. They also have arms that are long even for a large octopus. They have a max mantle length of 30 cm, but their longest pair of arms can have an arm span of over 3 m! #OCTOtober
A close up of a Maori Octopus (Macroctopus maorum) focused on its head. It has dark red and bumpy, wrinkly skin skin. One of its eyes is visible and is staring directly at the camera, making it look as if it has a judgmental expression.A Maori octopus (Macroctopus maorum) sitting in among seaweed and extending its long arm at the camera. The seaweed looks like a bush, and its probably attached to a rock that the octopus is sitting on. The octopus is partially concealed, with its head and part of its mantle sticking out. The arm is rather long, although it might look a bit longer from how the camera was set up. It extends from the seaweed, curving down, then curving up while twisting, then going back down and then turning right and then steeply up. The tuckers are clearly visible as they are facing the camera at the end. They are cream coloured, contrasting with the brown of the rest of the octopus. There are two rows of offset suckers, and they are appear to have a brown rim with little fringes. There is not great visibility in the water in the background, but some pillars are visible in the background, possible part of a pier.A Maori octopus (Macroctopus maorum) sitting among some rocks. It is partially between a gap between to rocks, and it is facing into the gap and away from the camera. The octopus has its papillae raised, so its mantle and head look very bumpy. It is reaching towards the photographer, with two of them lifted up and curving back, exposing their suckers towards the camera. The two arms take a significant part of the photo, so they make it look like the octopus is trying to block the camera. The octopus is dark orange and has a wrinkly texture with lots of larger bumps.
