Semi-nomadic. Data isn't all I do, but it's a living. My technical work is at semanticdebt.com.

Anthropic banning “abusive or cruel behavior” toward Claude in its new usage policies is proof to me that tech companies are going to moderate violence against AI before they ever moderate violence against women and minorities

The reactionary centrist position is that postponing the election bc of racist violence is the middle ground between canceling entirely and holding it as the founders f'ing intended. That's my bet.

"Incite race riots" is a midterm turnout strategy that hasn't been used in a while. He will try it elsewhere this month too.

Easily my favorite detail:
There was the incident that became known as "the Lauren error": One day, her daughter Lauren, then four years old, was playing with
the command module simulator at the Instrumentation Lab when she somehow activated a pre-launch program, called P01, while the simulator was in midflight — which crashed the simulator altogether. Hamilton created a program add-on in the technical documentation warning users not to launch
P01 during flight. She also proposed a software fix to prevent the error happening during a real mission, but she was overruled on the grounds that the highly trained astronauts were never going to make that same mistake. Yet during the Apollo 8 mission in 1968, that's exactly what happened: Jim Lovell inadvertently launched P01 during the flight, causing the on-flight navigational data to vanish. Hamilton and her team were called in to solve the error, and after that her proposed changes were
integrated into the program.

A weird flaw in the business model is that agent token use is broadly speaking opex, and software engineering is capex. I can't get anyone to spend anything on opex when it comes to data. Everyone is laying off to cut opex. How is transferring 95% of labor cost to monthly opex going to go over?

That's what we need. Across the country the deferred maintenance on physical plant and institutions has been destroyed by 46 years of continuous austerity. There's way more than enough money in the 10x increase in billionaire wealth since just 2010, in genuinely non-productive money.

Also there's a lot of the economic equivalent of "coyotes running on air" right now. That is a key feature of consensual reality: The argument that as long as you don't look down you can keep running.

But the number of times in my career I've heard "but what does it mean? what should we do?" said in an American accent followed by an explanation in a non-American accent? Anyway. People, take a look around at who's doing what in your companies. I love this country, but seriously.

In the Bay Area, the Americans do the "decisions," which is to say they depend on the recent immigrants - Indians, the Chinese, or the Canadians - to figure out what the data means. Also some very smart Americans who value analytics, sure.

This whole "maybe we were too meritocratic" thing is about as sensible as... I've been doing analytics for 30 years. 90% of the people who do the analytical work - the f'ing synthesis, evaluation and recommendation - at the companies I worked for were immigrants.

The rate limit on Truth in mathematics is still the ability of the human to check that the proof is, in fact, complete, sound and meaningful.

So one of the grains of salt we need here is: Lots of people are working on these proofs around the world, but not that many. Maybe 100s? If their prompts were used as "anonymous training data" all those chains of reasoning are now probable paragraphs, previously not seen. How many are there?

A customer just tried to use an employee discount code that ChatGPT gave her. I work at a high-end clothing store and clocked in to my manager telling me about the most unhinged interaction from yesterday. A woman walked in asking if she could use a 40% off code she got online. We don't have any sales running, so my manager looks at the screen and realizes ChatGPT straight up handed this woman a real employee's internal ID number.
