🇬🇱 on the US/DK agreement on Greenland, negotiated by State rather than by Trump's oligarchs, and whose outcome is still asymmetrically in favour of the US. Given previous credible threats of armed attack, I wonder if it may be challenged / invalidated as obtained "under duress".

In the 90s S-A saw the best result of a far-right party in Germany before the AfD. 13% for the DVU in 1998. S-A should not be the basis for sweeping conclusion about the electoral sociology of the AfD. The consequences might be far-reaching but your reporting will contribute to these consequences.

A few things (international) commentatoes should remember. Only 2 million people live in Sachsen-Anhalt. Half of Berlin, a tenth of NRW. Around 400k will vote AfD. Even with this strong result, 80% of people living in S-A will not have voted for the AfD. In a state that is a far-right stronghold.

I do wonder /why/ it is that voter frustration gets treated as "more real" if it comes from a cultural conservative than a cultural progressive now. Why does a mainstream political party figure, even fairly low-ranking, listen more to their father than their son?

Wikipedia has aligned with the comparative politics scholarship on parties before most international or US media, which keep living in a bothsidesist fantasy land.
The Republican Party, also known as the Grand Old Party (GOP), is a right-wing populist and neo-nationalist political party in the United States, sitting on the right-wing to far-right of the political spectrum. Founded in 1854, it emerged as the main rival of the Democratic Party in the 1850s, and the two parties have dominated American politics since then.

[one paragraph on history, see here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republican_Party_(United_States)]

Following the civil rights era, the Republican Party's use of the Southern strategy appealed to many white voters disaffected by Democratic support for civil rights, and de facto flipping the two parties' stances. The 1980 election of Ronald Reagan as president realigned national politics, consolidating a coalition of free market advocates, social conservatives and foreign policy hawks under the Republican banner. Since 2009, a shift toward right-wing populism culminated in the 2016 election of Donald Trump as president, whose leadership style and political agenda—often referred to as Trumpism—reshaped the party's identity and political platform.

The present-day Republican Party is primarily right-wing populist and neo-nationalist with smaller conservative, Christian right, and libertarian factions, all of which have greatly diminished in influence since 2016. Its ideology has since largely shifted towards illiberalism, favoring strong presidential power[38][39] and a statist government to enforce conservative cultural values.[40] This includes broad opposition to abortion, LGBT rights, immigration, and gun control. On economic policy, it supports mercantilism while opposing labor unions. During the 20th and early 21st centuries, it cooperated internationally with conservative parties. Since the 2020s it has aligned with global far-right parties,[41][42][43] and white nationalist beliefs have become influential within the party,[44] including support for remigration.[45][46][47][48]

Libraries are the last proof that the richest things in life are free.
Photo by Talha Resitoglu. A library reading room seen from the rear. A barrel-vaulted ceiling opens to a long skylight of pale glass. Tiered wooden shelves hold books along two galleries, with a stained glass window, a round clock, and carved lions on marble at the right. Below, people read and work at long tables, laptops and bottles beside them. A white-haired man in a pale shirt sits nearest, turned away. Red and cream patterned carpet covers the floor.

Shout-out to libraries. Where else can you just chill outside with a 4yo as you pretend to be magic fairies careening about a large grassy area, then pop indoors for air conditioning, coloring pages, and benches to read four books in a row that you then get to take home, no charge? Libraries rule.

If you're a biologist, especially one in a field that has a history of eugenics and racism (which absolutely includes my own field of evolutionary biology) and you choose to remain "neutral" as race science once again crawls out from under its rock, you are not in fact neutral.

Because both the demographics + the social relationships in a multiethnic Britain are (very) different to the dynamics of race in America, we might well expect anti-racism to take a different form in Britain to America. [From my book, 2023]
Fortunately, there are good reasons to expect that the new
anti-racism will take a diff erent form in Britain than America,
because inter-ethnic relationships are diff erent here. Th e basic
demographic facts – while black Americans make up 13 per cent
of the population, the black British are a 4 per cent group –
interact with a diff erent history, geography and patterns of
education and social life to mean there is less social distance
between black and white Britain than between black and white
America.
Geography matters too. Half of the black British live in
Greater London and half outside of it. So there is a signifi cant
diff erence in the familiarity of everyday social contact in the capi-
tal, where black people make up a sixth of the overall population,
and contact in the rest of the UK, outside the major cities, where
the black British are closer to one-fi ftieth of the population. For
many people, contact is indirect. If the black British are more
familiar from news and politics, television, culture and sport
than from real-life contact, then cultural and media representa-
tions, whether negative or positive, will have a bigger impact on
perceptions.
Overall, there is considerably less residential and educational
segregation by race in Britain than America: the main centres of
black British population are either mixed areas with no single
majority group, as in most inner London boroughs, or are mixed
areas that are majority white. And there are much higher levels of
inter-ethnic relationships – British-born people of black
