Also, the flawed Athenian democracy literally fell because a bunch of xenophobic dipshits insisted on unrestrained power for their homeland and had contempt for and felt free to abuse allied states. All while facing the challenge of another, even more authoritarian power.

I don’t think the roman helmet guys on musk’s csam emporium know this one (from josephine quinn’s how the world made the West)
By now the Roman imperial economy depended heavily on African agriculture, manufacturing, and trade, much of which was in the hands of Africans themselves. At the same time, local landowners attained great power and status in Rome: by the 180s CE nearly a third of Roman senators were of African origin.[33] These were men like Septimius Severus,

I think people sometimes make a mistake of assuming that this process is what people prefer. But people will pay attention to things that evoke fear and anger, not because they like it, but because we are biased to attend to sources of threat.

Everything you see happening to the United States is an intelligence operation run by professionals who know how the system works.
They have access to unlimited funding through the American taxpayer via NGO's & U.S. agencies like USAID. The only way to defeat these people is to strip the system and rebuild it from the ground up with people of integrity.

Imagine a judge asking a toddler with NO lawyer if they agree to voluntary departure or want a removal order. That's what the Trump admin is forcing kids—who are as young as 2 years old—to do in immigration courts. That's not due process. That's insane. These are KIDS.

The point I’m making is not “recognize how good you’ve got it.” It’s that the gloom people feel today is *not* some inherent reaction to poor living standards or looming societal risks. Other societies have faced far, far worse. The pessimism is a social construct, an idea being spread somehow.

And the very notion of needing to choose a strategic direction counsels against another idea you see a lot: that every vulnerable individual has unique insight into advocacy that must be deferred to. Those people don’t all agree with each other and effective advocacy requires picking the best path.

After some of the debates on this site over the last few days, I think it’s important to remember: Sometimes activists and advocates have to make difficult, strategic decisions. Sometimes they have to confront internal conflicts and resolve them. This is how they succeed.
