On a whim, to get myself back into coding for the coming term, I decided to write a program to show the Mandelbrot Set. After about 20 minutes of using #JuliaLang with #Pluto, the following graph appeared. Not impressive I know, but my very first image and I think it looks kind of cute.
A graph of 41 by 41 pixels, with colors ranging from on the outside a dark purple to orange to yellow as you move to the centre, with a black shape in the centre that looks a bit like an alien coming to greet us, silhouetted by the setting sun.

Behold! An actual Julia Set, a relative of the Mandelbrot Set, programmed in the Julia programming language in the last couple hours. I love programming in #JuliaLang using #Pluto notebooks. For years I've been thinking that I wanted to produce a Julia set using the Julia language. 😀
A complex image on a background of dark purple, with a black shape in the middle with a fractal boundary with many curves and projections, with the boundary highlighted in shades of yellow and orange. This is a Julia set with the c parameter set to -0.169 - 0.6479i.

For a 12-minute summary of the Driving W Hypothesis, see this Youtube video of my talk at the Evolution 2026 conference (starting at 26:55 in this session recording): youtu.be/9yb3h-gNrm4?... #Evolution2026 #Evol2026
A slide from the presentation, with the heading "What happens if a W mutates to a driving W?" On the left and right are two family trees, each showing the mating of a female (ZW sex chromosomes) and a male (ZZ), with expected proportions of offspring shown. On the left, the Z and W segregate in expected 50:50 proportions, whereas on the right there is a driving W, which has a transmission advantage. This results in a female-biased offspring sex ratio. The driving W increases in frequency compared to the normal W each generation. The mitochondrial type that happens to co-occur with the driving W also increases in frequency.
