We are often asked whether pangenomes are worth the hassle. The files can be large and methods to explore them are much more challenging than linear references. Earlier this week, we preprinted a clear example of how and why pan-genome graphs are so important for trait discovery.

These silicon valley LLM companies are not being run by pipefitters from community colleges. Most if not all slop publication houses are run by phds. Chances are, all fraudulent, scam and slop papers you'll ever read will come from people who had postgrad education. They're always one of you.

AI didn’t “go rogue.” People connected a computer system they know can mess with another computer system in unpredictable ways to less advanced computer system and it messed with that computer system in unpredicted ways. As @tressiemcphd.bsky.social argues, don’t lose sight that *people* did that.

Setting up #guile within #android #termux environment. Guile 3.0.11 is in termux pkg, and guile-colorized install via cloning the repo, running: mkdir -p "$(guile -c '(display (car %load-path))')/ice-9" Then make install. Add necessary lines to .guile & we have first class repl on arm android

I had some issues running this one with snap version of chromium on Ubuntu - potentially because it's sandboxed without requisite libraries? Flatpak version fares a lot better, but you need to go to chrome://flags and enable vulkan, vulkan from angle, and vulkan angle use. 💻🧬

OhMyREPL 0.6 is compatible now with Julia 1.13 (but no prior versions). It has the colorschemes! still from before – and loads again Monokai by default. There brackets and functions have the same color. But you can change that now. I have OhMyREPL back in my startup.jl and get

Many in US idealize young biotech startups. My experience being interviewed at a pretty well known US East sequencing co. was constantly having my blue collar job experience pointed out and being told "I'm a guy brought in to mow the lawn" there, so I need to shut up about bioinfo pipeliines 🫠 🧪

I think 1.13 syntax highlight system is intended as programmable interface, so there's a bit of additional work for people who just want repl highlights out of box. I can see there being a Julia module for syntax/repl styling collection in the future, which could be interesting. #julialang

If you were using Julia for any production stuff I'd hold off on updating to 1.13 for now. Running into strange errors if my config/startup.jl contains references to OhMyREPL, and also running into bunch of precompilation errors in different environments I didn't see before update. #julialang

Power situation in the lab had been dicey lately - I think the already lackluster grid is overloaded by people sneaking in AC/coolers/ So every time checking nvtop on my workstation is a lot more thrilling than it should be. I won't be able to meet deadlines if another basecalling run cancels out.

Spent the night on a crashcourse on nmcli and dnsmasq, all you need to spin up a quick subnet with ethernet connected NAS Big caveat - you can delete UGOS and boot with different distro, but you can't get firmware updates without it. And UGOS image is only available through their customer service.

These recent AMD unified memory APUs are pretty nuts. 395+ is about 20% faster overall than Ryzen 9 5950x but with 5x faster memory access - but real cherry on the top is the machine built on it takes less than half the power draw doing the same task. The package takes less power than my laptop!

I remember 'thought leaders' in TED and silicon valley circuits talking in private about how tech should be in closer communication with government and work in lockstep back in early 2010's. Vaguely remember writeups on new lobby and PAC potentials too. Funny how it all worked out.
