Bette Davis may very well have been first to use a now ubiquitous comeback. Monroe Owsley says "Come on now, let's quit kidding." Bette Davis quips "That's what he said." Poor Monroe's confused: "That's what who said? Davis: "That's what every man says." Yet another reason she is Queen Queen.

Watched a zinger of a pre-code movie titled "Ex-Lady" with Bette Davis and Gene Raymond. Bette's character, Helen, is an independent-minded woman who is an illustrator for Cosmopolitan magazine and other publications. Favorite line: "No one has any rights about me, but me."

Watching very young James Caan and Martin Sheen in an episode of Route 66 from 1961. Caan was so new to television he was billed as Jimmy Caan.
The episode of Route 66 featuring James Caan and Martin Sheen was titled "...and the cat jumped over the moon."

The stars of the series were Martin Milner and George Maharis.

I read Jaws by Peter Benchley this summer and I was shocked to see that the 24th printing of the 50th anniversary edition contained a blatant factual error no one at Doubleday had caught in all those reprints. It concerns the movie Weekend at the Waldorf (not where my thumb is...farther down)

My friend of 21 years and countless good times, Kimberly Garrett, has gone way too soon. We had one of our movie nights on Monday and an especially good talk. Two days later she died peacefully, leaving so many broken hearts. I am hanging on to the many beautiful memories. But oh I miss you, Kim.

Latest issue of @andchangepoetry.bsky.social is lit. Here is a poem by Blue Fay:
BLUE FAY

Break open the word despair and you'll find it contains nothing but air

The morning after I moved to L.A.,
I found a cattle skull smashed
on the sidewalk. That afternoon, I saw
a man in a pair of waders pull a koi fish
out of Echo Park Lake. The fish was exquisite,
all dark gold scales and big pink lips
gasping around the hook
of the man's fishing line. He held the koi
in his arms like it was a toddler throwing
a tantrum, carefully working the hook
out of its mouth, before wading
out into the lily pads and lowering
it back into the water. There is no mercy
without terror. In all the years since your death,
I have never questioned how a kiss
could turn into a knife. Something shatters
on the sidewalk. Something thrashes
in the shallows. I exhale.
I accept it all.Loch Baillie

From Cape Cod poet John Bonanni's book Retrovirilogy (University of Pittsburgh Press) this haunting eloquent poem "Death of the Sperm Whale."
Death of the Sperm Whale

At the Whaling Museum in New Bedford,
my father & I walk into a life-
size ship of what a vessel might
have looked like for the long need
of whale slaughter. Everyone
is here on a Saturday. We walk
around the deck & duck our heads
in the same way any sailor would
& just like a real sailor, you, too, can touch
wood & you, too, can hit your head on the mast.
We roam to a Plexiglas table
to peer into the quarters below:
Small, claustrophobic. A group
of school children climbs aboard.
A chaperone tells them to stay together,
but they don't.
One child disappears
into the laughter.
Another child
won't stop crying.
He is afraid of the stairs.

Saw the new digital restoration of Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore at the Berkeley film archive. I don't think I ever fully appreciated how brilliant Ellen Burstyn's performance is, as a mom, an aspiring singer and a woman in search of love. Great cast including Harvey Keitel & Jodie Foster.

Made my grandmother's chicken soup and I could hear her saying a shallot is not the same as a leek and also good use of dill but where is the parsley you have to make it (deep breath) healthy. Also what's with the macaroni you couldn't make egg noodles? I know she would have loved to make it herself

in August in San Francisco, folks hardly seem to notice the rather gory sidewalks under the Red Flowering Gum trees, which shed the stamens of their umbellasters in vivid shades of vermillion and crimson. I find myself absolutely transfixed by these tiny filaments windswept and wondrous.

Liv Ullman and Peter Finch in one of my all-time favorite movies "Lost Horizon" (the musical).
The beautiful thing about this movie is that, like Camelot and Paint Your Wagon, almost none of the principle players (in this case Finch and Ullman as well as Charles Boyer, Olivia Hussey, James Shigeda, George Kennedy, Michael York, John Geilgud) could actually sing. And most of the songs were horrible. And yet it all creates a spectacular kind of theatrical magic. 🪄 🎥 🍿♥️

"For Our Students Reading the Odyssey" by Brenda Hillman. From her 2022 book In a Few Minutes Before Later.
For Our Students Reading the Odyssey

A little hope existed in the fate shapes

Then you remembered how alike you were to earth

Mercury minutes not stolen from time

Each phrase gleaming with a color of the senses

But history hovered while the leader spoke landishly

But a goddess had bathed you

But the sailor had fallen from the house

& when barley had been offered for the dead

& when the invisible had been eaten by the visible

Much was offered sticky sugars from the pines

The so-called lower elements still had eyes

& spoke to you or could have

Two thirds of the way through, and Brody is getting down to business.
"I've heard the name," Brody said. "Did you ever look into the guy, Harry?"

"I read what little there was. As far as I know, he's never done anything illegal."

"Well," said Brody, "maybe it's worth a call."

"You're joking," said Hooper. "You'd really do business with this guy?"

"I'll tell you what, Hooper. At this point, if someone came in here and said he was Superman and he could piss that shark away from here, I'd say fine and dandy. I'd even hold his dick for him."

"Yeah, but...”
