I was at a session at a journalism gathering recently that was about to focus on AI use in journalism. The moderator told us that we couldn’t bring up data centers. So I left. Why? Because I’m a journalist and we don’t avoid the hard, uncomfortable, inconvenient parts. 🤷

I’m reading this for the first time, and it brought tears to my eyes. There are reasons we do what we do and how we do it. We support+cheer on each other, and don’t compete w each other. Vitally, we have a largely unspoken no-assholes rule. I learned the hard way before MFP. Never retain jerks.

Yes!!!!! The first step for me was realizing how much I inadvertently supported places (newsrooms, publishers, authors, TV, etc) where men crowded out women. Take a look at the (proverbial if needed) masthead of the things you support!

Remember: It is much, much harder for women’s innovations and brilliance to get financial support and be taken as seriously as men’s ideas. It’s perpetual fact. But we can all change this starting today. This is an obvious way to change our world for future generations.

Job applicants are using AI to write resumes and prep interview answers. Companies are using AI to screen those applications and conduct initial interviews. We’ve officially automated both sides of a process meant to measure human connection. The irony is genuinely unreal.

I’m a Dartmouth professor. Pres. Beilock implies in this piece that she speaks for us as a college. She does not. I don’t permit AI in my classroom. Not because it stole my work; because as I wrote in @chronicle.com, most of my students hate it—and feel betrayed by the college—even more than I do.

The NYT lost the Pulitzer for their transphobic podcast series with Azeen Ghorayshi to Pablo Torre and his reporting on the Clippers. They're salty about it so of course they're not going to properly credit him.

Eddie Reyes-Ochoa has been in the U.S. for 20 years. He works in construction, has a wife who just graduated law school with a baby on the way, and is close to earning his green card.
