The White House has turned COVID.gov from a public health resource into a politically charged platform promoting the lab-leak theory and attacking specific scientists and the pandemic response in general. Let’s fact check its 5 headline claims… 🧵
The virus possesses a biological characteristic that is not found in nature.
2.

Data shows that all COVID-19 cases stem from a single introduction into humans. This runs contrary to previous pandemics where there were multiple spillover events.
3.

Wuhan is home to China’s foremost SARS research lab, which has a history of conducting gain-of-function research (gene altering and organism supercharging) at inadequate biosafety levels.
4.

Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) researchers were sick with COVID-like symptoms in the fall of 2019, months before COVID-19 was discovered at the wet market.
5.

By nearly all measures of science, if there was evidence of a natural origin it would have already surfaced. But it hasn’t.

NIH grant applications often run to well over 100 pages, and if awarded there is a contract to receive funding so researchers can deliver the science in the grant proposal. It’s not ‘entitlement’ to want that agreement to be honoured.

Wholeheartedly recommend this brief read, and highlight this portion, which I think gets at a recurring 'all-or-nothing' quality about a lot of the work companies like OpenAI are trying to get their models to replicate/independently produce. It's either the model "gets it" or it doesn't.
Which brings us on to the second problem. We don’t train PhD students so they can continually produce papers of similar quality to their first one. We help train them so they will get better, and grow as scientists. Even if AI could match early PhD-level output, having an AI ‘scientist’ who needs close supervision and guidance forever is not nearly as useful as non-scientists might assume. As I’ve written about previously, it would just create an unscalable and unmanageable team dynamic.
