Comic panel of Donald Duck and a wide-eyed young Mickey Mouse. Donald's speech bubble: "Democrats should do a huge middle class tax cut to address affordability." Mickey's speech bubble: "Fool that you are, for you treat taxation as a burden rather than the means by which our burdens are eased. Behold a civilization rich in private wealth yet starved of public provision, where every man owns what his grandfathers could not imagine and yet trembles at the thought of how he will weather an illness or loss of livelihood. Will you fight for an affirmative vision of broad contribution and universal benefit? Or will you perish like a dog?"

Edmonton adopted a harsh policy of removing encampments a few years ago, while Calgary did not. A study of the first year following that shift found a five-fold increase in emergency amputations in Edmonton over previous years with no change in Calgary's rate.

My belated #yegdt hot take is that it actually isn't that bad. It has problems, but they're long-running ones that go back decades. Claims that it's broken are very overwrought, and worth a side-eye; it's generally been getting better. And no, it's not because of the hockey thingy. 1/lots w/ maps!

At this point, i just can’t understand why members of the legislature haven’t called a non-confidence vote on Danielle Smith—unless most UCP MLAs are also separatists who don’t give a flying fuck about the welfare of Albertans, then it makes sense.

Congratulations to CMHC, Edmonton City Council and all of the YIMBYs who "ruined" real estate investing in Edmonton. If we don't want housing to be primarily treated as an investment, we need to end the shortage. www.instagram.com/reel/DbmApzb...
Instagram post from wayne_hillier_rei. Video is linked. Text alongside video:
CMHC MLI Select financing helped create a massive development boom in Edmonton, but investors overdid it.

In 2024, Edmonton had low vacancy, strong rental demand and some of the best real estate investment opportunities in Canada. Then investors flooded the market and started building infill multiplexes everywhere.

All that new rental supply increased vacancy and created downward pressure on rents, especially among similar new-build units competing for the same tenants.

Just because financing makes a development possible doesn’t automatically make it a good investment. Edmonton real estate investors need to understand current supply, vacancy rates, realistic rents and tenant demand before buying or building.

Do you think Edmonton’s multiplex rental market is oversaturated?

I do think we have to very carefully guard against unequal enforcement and brutalizations of homeless people But tolerating ‘disorder’ rather than accepting it as an issue and proactively and compassionately addressing it just means that the right will come in and brutalize people all they want

The essence of electoral democracy is equality. Whenever equality is compromised (e.g. big money, gerrymandering, unequal district population distribution), democracy is compromised, distrust grows, and political rights are undermined. The risk is real.
