Edmonton submission #1

Mill Woods Road is really the centerpiece of this pilot, which would actually be great if it had any bike infrastructure whatsoever, or at least wasn’t insanely wide

This was a slide from a committee meeting on July 2nd about restricting lodging houses in row housing (wasn’t really happening but was just trying to poison pill) The idea that on a lot with 8 units, 8 bedrooms should be the max is wild

I always forget how short the RiverHawks season is every year But I was able to make 2/3 games this weekend (and pickup a “I got that dog in me” shirt) One of my favourite things about this place

IMO the old railway rights of way really define Downtown. Even though they’re not there anymore MacEwan and Rogers, and even Railtown Park really feel like borders

We cannot be conflating “central edmonton” with “downtown”. Also the person who said Blatchford is Downtown must be from outside the Henday

This graph really put a lot into perspective for me. We don't have a lack of retail space, we have a lack of retail space WHERE PEOPLE LIVE. Even with more permissive zoning and denser greenfield development, walkable and street-fronting retail is the last big zoning step.

One of my favs in Edmonton at Eaux Claires that I don't think has ever actually been used because the neighbourhood next to it still hasn't actually developed Rezoning just happened last week to add a bunch more apartment buildings, so hopefully buses will be running on it soon!

God bless the CTV employee who has a fascination with the Cactus Rats saga to the same extend I do (Patrick Cassidy, owner of the Cactus Rats pictured)

Don't see much progress on this stadium since last year btw...

Daniel @danyelling.bsky.social · 11/06/2026
For reference, this stadium started construction in 2023, and this picture was taken June 3rd Also a comparison to the rendering

Another street-oriented mixed use building in the suburbs
110
Daniel @danyelling.bsky.social · 25/05/2026
One of the most interesting suburban developments in Edmonton imo. This site is entirely developed under Edmonton's standard low-rise apartment RM zone It isn't perfect, but it's a mixed use site in the middle of a neighbourhood with street-oriented commercial and residential (next to a school too)

Edmonton has a time capsule stored away that is gonna be opened in the 2090s!

So with the low-level bridges set to close in the next few budget cycles What are everyone's thoughts on shutting down some roads and returning space to the River Valley

Ah so it’ll be released along with the Alberta Rail Master Plan

There are some weird inconsistencies between that and this graph (in the same reports) about our fleet composition Both obviously tell a story of a very old fleet, but would be good to get some clarity on this

Are the 2002 buses immortal or something??? Why are they not planned for retirement?

Daniel @danyelling.bsky.social · 01/05/2026
Standardized 6 plexes would be amazing, could incentivize better design What I really wanna see tho is expedited neighbourhood mixed use designs. Not a lot of edmonton developers can do mixed use, and we lost out on a lot of good neighbourhood commercial because of this

Edmonton literally has the perfect setup for this A small ring road in one of the wealthiest neighbourhoods right near Downtown

I love this type of stat, but have always been disappointed that the info is shown as household emissions rather than per person emissions Higher-density units typically have smaller household sizes, making the comparison between unit types a little hard to do if you aren't accounting for it

This would be so preferable to concentric expansion we are doing now (if we actually got transit expansion and designed neighbourhoods well...)

Daniel @danyelling.bsky.social · 08/03/2026
This is just a bit of an expensive day no? Like I only buy gas once every few months, but like I feel like this is a pretty ordinary price on the high range
110
Daniel @danyelling.bsky.social · 02/03/2026
Blatchford will be ok for bikes, and the east side will be very connected to LRT, but we don't talk much about how this neighbourhood was designed with a complete lack of thought for buses. If you live in the NW of Blatchford, your transit access may be worse than a typical Edmonton neighbourhood

Missing Milan right now I was there for a few days over the summer, and taking the metro or trams around felt so comfortable and modern I think my fav part was taking the metro to a random stop and walking around a dense and vibrant neighbourhood not encircled by 7 lane stroads like TOD in Canada

Two governments managing jurisdictions that have experienced rapid growth recently Two very different abilities and willingnesses to accommodate and embrace growth I talk about how Edmonton isn’t keeping up, but compared to the province we might as well be years ahead

I’ve never seen the Century Park bike parkade this busy! Especially in January This is doubly impressive given that to access it you have to go downtown and fill out a form that the service center people don’t even know exists, to get a blank white card that only works at this one place

I would be very interested to see changes in traffic counts along these three roads pre/during/post valley line construction... My thoughts are maybe we don't need 3 multi-lane arterial roads within 1km...
