This is a female Black Meadowhawk. Meadowhawk habitat, yep, meadows and shallow wetlands. Peak time now to see them in Rocky Mountain States, though they are circumboreal in distribution.
The inch and a quarter long female Black Meadowhawk are not all black like adult males. Instead they are yellow-brown on the top half of the abdomen (bottom half black) and the top side of the thorax. The side of the thorax is distinctly marked with yellow shapes. Largest shape behind head like an upside down boot, then separated by black embedded with four small elliptical shapes, finally bordered with larger crude blob. As pictured dragonfly postioned atop snowberry exhibiting  "obelisk" behavior...body posture to dissipate heat.

The clearspot bluewing (Zenithoptera lanei) is a dazzling species that spends most of its time up in the rainforest canopy. These delicate dragonflies only come down to lower perches around noon, allowing us a brief glimpse of their beauty, especially when the sunlight hits their wings just right 👌
