Chinook salmon have recolonised 88% of their historic range on the Klamath River, with more than 13,000 fish passing the old Iron Gate Dam site in 2025, up from 7,700 the year before. Two years after the dams’ removal, it’s going better than anyone predicted. buff.ly/pToC9gB #ShareGoodNewsToo

This is a female Black Meadowhawk. Meadowhawk habitat, yep, meadows and shallow wetlands. Peak time now to see them in Rocky Mountain States, though they are circumboreal in distribution.
The inch and a quarter long female Black Meadowhawk are not all black like adult males. Instead they are yellow-brown on the top half of the abdomen (bottom half black) and the top side of the thorax. The side of the thorax is distinctly marked with yellow shapes. Largest shape behind head like an upside down boot, then separated by black embedded with four small elliptical shapes, finally bordered with larger crude blob. As pictured dragonfly postioned atop snowberry exhibiting "obelisk" behavior...body posture to dissipate heat.

What happens when evolution adds an extra pair of eyes? Male mayflies evolve an extra pair of dorsal compound eyes, the Turbanate eyes, thought to help males detect females during mating swarms. we have investigate how this remarkable evolutionary novelty develops. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

Shifting baseline syndrome (SBS) is what happens when we forget how vibrant the natural world used to be. Each generation grows up with a more depleted environment and calls it “normal,” simply because it’s all they’ve ever known.
