ZGA is a universal and essential transition in animal development, by which embryos take control of their own gene expression. Despite its importance, ZGA has well been characterized in only a handful of model organisms, where both the timing and the identity of the genes involved greatly vary. 2/15

Model and mimic: a clever longhorn beetle (Euderces reichei, at right) tries its best to look like a local carpenter ant, Campontous decipiens, as they both feed on a spring dogwood flower. Brackenridge Field Laboratory, Texas.
Macro photograph, in top view, of two insects standing on a cluster of small, 4-petalled white flowers. Both insects have a red head and thorax and black at their back ends. The beetle on the right is slightly broader, and has a narrow white line separating the red and black parts of its body, as to suggest a narrow ant waist.

Mayflies are sexually dimorphic, with males having an extra set of 'turban'-like eyes. @isabelalmudi.bsky.social shows that turban eyes develop by adapting existing eye gene networks, likely downstream of an extra sex-determining gene found only in males. #gfe2026 More in @dev-journal.bsky.social⤵
