7/ On the triple lock: Moving to weaken the pension triple lock from 2030 to pay for social care is the wrong approach. With 1.7m pensioners in poverty, redistributing resources within our class is a sledgehammer. We should target extreme wealth with a scalpel instead.

Stand by what I said in July on #PoliticsLive on the triple lock. It's affordable, justifiable, and there are much better targets for saving money (even on pensions) than modifying the triple lock

Burnham could change tax relief on pension contributions for his projects. Gross tax relief in 2024-2025 was £83.9bn. 71% went to 7.7m additional & higher rate taxpayers. 29% to 30.4m basic rate taxpayers. Giving relief to all at 20% leaves £14.5bn spare for social care. But equality/equity?

If the triple lock on pensions will be scrapped. The 1st priority is to fix Pension Credit - the top up for the lowest earning pensioners to give them a basic minimum income. Shamefully many 100,000s of the poorest pensions still miss out on what they're entitled to.

Andy Burnham announces end of triple-lock on the state pension from 2030. It will be replaced by double-lock, slower growth in state pension. Full state pension is already less than 50%of the minimum wage. Poverty awaits future retirees. £500bn of taxes not collected by HMRC since 2010.

So Andy Burnham has promised to reverse the Thatcherite approach to public policy by.. err... restoring her policy of breaking the pensions-earning link, which then increased pensioner poverty. Barbara Castle, thou shouldst be living at this hour.

In 2021, income tax personal allowance was frozen at £12,570. If aligned with inflation, it would now be £16,070. A minimum wage earner in England will pay extra £980 in income tax & NIC in 2026-27. Govt can easily increase personal allowance by £3,000, worth £600 to basic rate taxpayer.

I really don't get why so many normally sane people completely lose their shit about NHS parking and expect it for free. Car parks cost money to build and manage. Paying manages the demand. Free means the NHS is taking money away from patient care to subsides drivers.

I can't really think of a less "socialist" stance than "fuck poor pensioners" out of sheer spite for the rich ones. generational warfare is pitching old working class people against young working class people. it serves only the interest of the super rich, who don't care about the state pension.

What if you campaigned for benefits of working age people to rise like the state pension instead of pushing for poor pensioners to be more impoverished? Also it is fiscally sustainable if they taxed WEALTH, which means clawing back from wealthy pensioners. Just a thought!

It’s time to retire “rich boomers” discourse and have a more nuanced conversation when Age UK research shows 2 million pensioners live in poverty, and once that triple lock is gone it won’t be coming back for future generations (older Gen X will be state pension age in about 7 years)

The thing that makes me really angry about the Mamdani video is its genesis is in acquiescing to a ‘why aren’t you wearing a helmet?’ cultural phenomenon. That semi-rhetorical question needs short shrift, as its prevalence is marginalising evidence-based discussion re road danger +/or public health.
