I’ve worn a grubby RNLI cap for decades. I sound London, but I was born in Truro and I was a basically feral (Gen X) kid wandering the coast path with a dog until sunset for a lot of my early life. The lifeboats are in the fabric like trawlers and farms and pasties and fish and chips.

i still think it's a shame that they made the predators a species obsessed with hunting when they could have had them just be normal guys and the ones who come to earth be the equivalent of suburban dentists who pay $20k to go on safari in Africa and murder some poor lion

Handing over the part with the fortifications in the hope that the invader will be satisfied and won't come back later for the rest which is now much harder to defend. We saw how that worked out for Czechoslovakia with the Sudetenland.

What we want is someone who can cast “exile” on trans people and then return us to the board with a +1/+1 counter at the start of the next turn, meanwhile sending all the curses the GOP put on us to the graveyard

It’s incredibly weird that we taught sand how to talk and the talking sand is helping us learn to understand other things that talk.

"British Isles" leaves out the Channel Islands as well. They're a separate archipelago. It's only really people who have a connection to the Isle of Man who get to object to "Britain and Ireland".

It just feels halfhearted. Either keep the original name or commit to the bit, get a dictionary and go for something like Oaklands or Aikenshaw.

Strange that "find this one trick" seems more plausible to some than "convince the British voters and government to support something that's clearly in the national interest".

We really have come a long way as a society, before feminism, only a man could make a career out of having a psychotic break that causes them to worship the president as some kind of avatar of god.

Monaco, Andorra, Liechtenstein and San Marino should be put into a place where they are not allowed to tax haven their way into fiscal sustainability. If they still want to remain independent afterwards, by all means. But pay the price of independence like the rest of us do.

It’s hard to explain but tv was better when you couldn’t watch the show you wanted whenever you wanted to watch it and most of the shows were worse and the TVs were worse and the entire experience was worse, that’s when it was better

The four semifinalists included all three countries that legitimately governed the Falklands at one time or another, as well as Argentina

Ironically, the semifinalists were the three countries that have owned the Falklands at one point, plus Argentina.

This point needs to be made over and again: The main purpose of wealth taxes should not be to raise revenue. That's a small and secondary benefit. The main purpose should be to *reduce the fortunes of the ultrarich*. Why? Because those fortunes present a massive threat to democracy and public life.

I think the AI boom is the best thing to happen to humanities students in years because one cycle of "AI savvy" graduates as employees is all it'll take for like 90% of employers to peace out and go looking for people who have actual skills

I don't even like PA, I find them incredibly dodgy and suspicious. I just don't think we can take seriously an anti-terrorism enforcement regime which cracks down on grannies with placards harsher than on the actual UDA!

Marxists who praise foreign tyrants do so because they want to put on the boots of tyranny to stomp on your neck at home. It isn't solidarity with the "oppressed", it is a sadistic power fantasy. A Marxist who praises the Iranian morality police simply craves the power to be the morality police.

there were already many reasons to do this but Elon Musk actively encouraging racist violence in Belfast should be the final straw for every UK government institution to stop doing business - including being on X - with him in any way, and for him to be barred from entry to the country.

The Ukrainian decision to double down on drone warfare, from the battlefield, to mid range and long range strike, and not to draft all of its young men to make infantry, will be seen by historians as one of the most important decisions in 19th-21st century warfare.

My position on the death penalty is straightforward: Some people deserve to die for their crimes. But our system of justice is imperfect, and because of that, we are incapable of making that decision in a truly fair manner. Given the consequences of mistakes, we must eliminate the death penalty.

Bupa's online services perhaps the first example I have encountered of 'a chatbot that has created a job for a human being' in that a bunch of things you used to just be able to just fill out a form for you now talk to a chatbot, who fails to to the thing, and then passes you onto a person.

Yeah, but it's a bit like really bending a plastic ruler. Uo to a point, increased interest rates tell people to stop being stupid and stopped bending the ruler. But if the ruler has snapped then higher rates just make things worse and it flips to stimulus being better (you need to buy a new ruler).

I feel like I'm going crazy. Very few people would honestly object to an MP having a glass of wine at a reception. That is not the accusation. The accusation is: "Your MPs are getting wasted on the job and then casting votes". No part of their role remotely justifies that, obviously? Right?
