I'm sure there's a good story having to do with local expertise and survival of the fittest but it's amazing how the shittiest cheapest most fly-infested pizza place in NYC would be the best pizza in most other American cities.

A version of the "Aella's birthday gangbang" Sankey diagram but it's about Bluesky posters thinking about posting Sankey diagram jokes, leading from "thought about Sankey diagram joke" through various iterations of workshopping and writing the joke (with various dead ends due to forgetting about it, losing interest, etc). Eventually at the end the joke is finally posted; some posters do numbers with it, some don't, some came in a fluffer

i will be DAMNED if i lose to a CONCEPT www.qwantz.com/index.php?co...
T-Rex: Today's job: achieve inner peace. And the clock is ticking: there's no time to waste!
T-Rex: It's OVERDUE, actually.

T-Rex: Cards on the table, I needed to have inner peace DAYS ago and I most DEFINITELY need it RIGHT NOW!!Dromiceiomimus: Buddy - I think if you want to be at peace you must either solve what's troubling you or learn to accept it, so that you can simply exist without worry.
T-Rex: Right. Okay. I can do this.
T-Rex: I will simply achieve peace by making peace with everything that's preventing me from achieving peace! EASY!Narrator: LATER:
Utahraptor: So - how's achieving enlightenment going?
T-Rex: NOT GREAT!

T-Rex: I'm beginning to suspect that it's a task that may take my WHOLE LIFETIME to complete, or - and this is even WORSE - one of those BALONEY tasks that can NEVER be completed because it turns out the attempt, the JOURNEY, is more important than the destination!!
Utahraptor: Oh god, I hate those tasks.
T-Rex: EVERYONE DOES!! The purpose of journeys is to REACH DESTINATIONS! Dying in the middle of an one is just a LOSING to a JOURNEY, and a journey is an INANIMATE CONCEPT that doesn't even know you're alive!
T-Rex: ARGH!! I WON'T LIE, folks! I am really QUITE FAR from INNER PEACE RIGHT NOW!!

his name being on things is important to him, clearly, but he struggles with associating it with anything to do with soft power like arts/culture. This isn't just because artists overwhelmingly dislike him (though that of course factors in) but because he's utterly incapable of philanthropic work

I was watching Sesame Street with my son in our apartment in Hell's Kitchen when the BBC broke in with the news. A friend watched the towers fall from his balcony in Battery Park City. A student, late to work, was just out of the subway when the first tower fell.

This Day in Labor History: September 2, 1885. White miners in Rock Springs, Wyoming decided to exterminate the town’s entire Chinese community. Mostly Knights of Labor members, they killed at least 28 Chinese miners in the Rock Springs Massacre. Let's talk about white supremacy and unionism!

This Day in Labor History: August 18, 1823. Slaves in Guyana rose up in the Demerara Rebellion. This was brutally suppressed by the English colonialists, but also played a critical role in building abolitionist support in Britain, paving the way for emancipation less than a decade later!!

I really enjoy EB White's take on New York and New Yorkers.
An excerpt from EB White's Here is New York
There are roughly three New Yorks there is first the New York of the man or woman who was born here who takes the city for granted and accepts its size and its turbulence is natural and inevitable second there is the New York of the commuter the city that is devoured by locusts each day and spat out each night third there is the New York of the person who was born somewhere else and came to New York in quest of something of these three trembling cities the greatest is the last the city of final destination the city that is a goal it is this third city that accounts for New York's high-strung disposition it's poetical deportment it's a dedication to the arts and it's incomparable achievements commuters give the city its title restlessness natives give it solidity and continuity but the settlers give it passion and whether it is a farmer arriving from Italy to set up a small grocery store in a slum or a young girl arriving from a small town in Mississippi to escape the indignity of being observed by her neighbors or a boy arriving from the corn belt with a manuscript in his suitcase and a pain in his heart it makes no difference each embraces New York with the intense excitement of first love each absorbs New York with fresh eyes of an adventurer each generates heat and light to dwarf the consolidated Edison company
