What PEN America Got Wrong About Antisemitism in Publishing

A thing I never noticed until passing as a man: When using a limited number of lanes at a swimming pool, people will often self-segregate by perceived sex. At my local pool, the lifeguards recently expanded the lanes when this careful balance got disrupted.

Here's the thing: I don't care about Ed Sheeran or his financial stakes in this. Beyond the obvious, what bothers me is that owners united to censor artistic expression in a way that they don't for any other issue except Israel. They are perfectly fine with artists espousing neo-nazi ideology.

The marriage fight was hard and profoundly frustrating. But the passage of prop 8 didn't invalidate my marriage. The loss of marriage rights isn't the same as having your passport/driver's license revoked and losing access to public spaces, among other things. Is it "maximalist" to say this?

Screenshot with text that reads: "Being prohibited from marriage is also an injustice with some material impacts as it pertains to shared health insurance, federal benefits, or legal agreements, but it is simply not the same as losing your health care, losing your career, losing equal access to public spaces, losing your passport, losing your driver’s license, losing your housing, being threatened with prosecution, or being threatened with having your children removed from your custody. Combined with the fact that transgender people weren’t doing well even before this wave of new restrictions - enduring higher rates of poverty, homelessness, physical violence, sexual violence, and illness while being overrepresented in our country’s foster care system, juvenile detention, survival sex trade, and prisons - I’d ask you to forgive trans people for being “maximalist” in defense of our own lives."

The new updates to a certain company’s line of products horrify me.

“Another Audio Intelligence feature is Siri Recap, which takes notes from your conversations and creates an AI-generated summary. You can enable it and choose to always have it on, or you schedule it to offer recaps at specific times of day. You can turn it on or off at any time. Audio is not recorded or stored and can’t be accessed by anyone, including Apple. The recaps are end-to-ebd encrypted, and speakers aren’t identified.”

I think this is it - and I wrote as much in a newsletter on the Market/Moulton primary a couple weeks ago. "Age" doesn't just mean age. It means being a fighter, not backing down or chasing polls. Markey defeated the "age" rap by showing he had the qualities age is a proxy for & Moulton did not.

I don't know, maybe I just have a very pedantic sense of what we do as musicologists, but is it really a good idea to describe something as a "Gen Alpha Melody" if the use of it goes back to the 19th century? It's a melodic sequence that reminds me of "the lick" www.npr.org/2026/07/31/n...

Why are people so upset that Emily Wilson didn’t like a movie purportedly based on her area of her expertise? The pile-on reads like a bunch of writers vying for attention. While it’s wonderful news for literature and the humanities, I do feel a twinge of disappointment in some of these folks.
