If you need a reason to resist and refuse the entrenchment of AI technologies in schools and demand a different vision of education, here's one: "The Trump administration is willing to put resources behind AI education and AI literacy, while it strips funds for actual public education."

Closing the Central Eurasian program at Indiana is a disaster for generations to come. It was a haven for developing expertise in regions virtually no other university would have. If the State Department, for example, has an expert on Mongolia or Tibet, they are likely IU grads.

I don’t think anyone is prepared for what they just did w/ ICE. This is not a simple budget increase. It is an explosion - making ICE bigger than the FBI, US Bureau of Prisons, DEA,& others combined. It is setting up to make what’s happening now look like child’s play. And people are disappearing.

This BBC graphic is a good way to show why reciprocal 25% tariffs will cause prices on some goods to go up far more than 25%. A piston used in a car engine made in Michigan will cross the U.S. border twice, and will be taxed 25% each time. Some products cross the U.S. border even more than that.
Heading: Tariffs could push up costs for car industry. The graphic shows a map, with 5 steps in the manufacture of a piston.

1. Powdered aluminium sent from Tennessee
2. Turned into rods in Pennsylvania
3. Shipped to Canada, Canadian tariff paid at border, rods shaped and polished in Canada
4. Rods sent to Mexico for assembly into pistons. Direct transfers from Canada to Mexico do not incur tariffs.
5. Shipped to Michigan. US tariff paid at border. Pistons become part of engine in Michigan.

Indiana isn't as big as Texas or Florida, but for those of us in higher education, it's worth paying attention to what is (and has been) going on. Take the Governor's new budget, which cut all of the $10M previously allocated to Martin University, the only predominantly Black school in the state.
State Rep. Gregory W. Porter (D-Indianapolis) released the following statement:

“The active intervention to end or attack anything in the budget that gives state dollars to people of color is sickening. I won’t mince my words: It’s racist. Black Hoosiers and other minorities pay taxes, so we deserve to benefit from the state budget as much as our white counterparts.“Martin University is Indiana’s only predominately Black institution. The only reason why it’s not an official HBCU is because it’s relatively young. Now they will receive zero state dollars, which is a complete cut from 2023. He also cut the College Success Program, which encourages minority and first-generation, low-income students to attend college. That means a total of $10 million in support for minority students has been eliminated."

Gorgeous British silk gown with metallic embroidery, believed to have been worn as a wedding dress in 1747 👰 (aaand there goes my morning looking at dresses in the @metmuseum collection) #18c www.metmuseum.org/art/collecti...
From the Met collection: this 1747 gown displays the exquisite patterning of English dress silks of the period, with delicate flowers and asymmetrical cartouches disposed in a graceful meander across an open ground. The ivory silk faille is brocaded with three types of silver thread, which add rich texture to the lively pattern. Sumptuous textiles such as this one signified wealth and were admired for the brilliant effects of light reflecting off their surfaces. The flat silver strip brocaded at the centers of the flower blossoms creates a coruscating effect, while the crinkled silver frisé of the stems produces a more restrained luster.
