I have two more ADULTS LIVING IN REALITY novels, and then I don't know what I'll do. I had a backlog of middle-aged ideas after my six years writing the Simon Snow books. But maybe I could write about teenagers again? IDK. 🤔

It would be funny if I eventually wrote another Simon Snow book without rereading the other three, and just remembering the vibes. "Milk McMilk,'" purple-haired Penelope said.

For the people who call me a milk propagandist, there are only three "milk" mentions in the novel I'm editing. But eight mentions of "cheese". (Tell me you're not writing a Simon Snow book without telling me you're not writing a Simon Snow book.) (Four mentions of "butter".)

If I take a step back, I think this is something I struggle with, with many of my characters. Wanting to write about their struggles in a way that isn't always encouraging or uplifting. I have to believe a story to feel uplifted by it. And for me that means letting in the sadness and the hell of it

I really struggle with "fat positivity." Surely it is positive to write a realistic character. But maybe some people prefer to read a story that only lets in positive feelings -- and who I am to say that's not good for their souls?

It would be delusional for Cherry to walk through the world assuming that people aren't clocking her weight when they meet her. Or for her to never think about how men perceive her body.

Rainbow Rowell @rainbowrowell.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
Readers sometimes mention that Cherry in Cherry Baby is very negative and self-loathing about her body ... I don't see her that way at all. I think Cherry is confident and loves her body -- but is realistic about the way the world sees her.

I'm editing two novels right now. (They'll come out soon.) One of them has about 100 chapters, which is normal for me. The other has 38! I've never written a book with so few chapters. I'm not sure how it happened. I didn't intentionally approach it differently.

Every year on this day I recall the awful moment when Frasier's producer Maggie Blanc phoned to tell me that the show's co-creator David Angell and his wife Lynn were on the first plane to hit the towers. A week later the Advocate asked me to write about David for their 9/11 issue. (1/2)
David Angell sitting in Martin's chair on the Frasier set.A photo of an article in the Advocate. There's a smiling picture of David Angell. The heading reads: "A creator and executive producer of Frasier is remembered by his colleague Joe Keenan. The text of the article reads: One day in the Frasier writer’s room we were toying with the idea that Niles, insolvent and desperate during his epic divorce from Maris, might stoop to writing a quickie self-help book, the sort that shamelessly flatters its readers in the hopes of achieving best-sellerdom. We needed a title for it, something both punchy and pandering. As we were all calling out uninspired suggestions I glanced over at David Angell. He smiled to himself then, adopting a look of foot-stomping petulance, said, “It’s Not Your Fault, Dammit!’ by Dr. Niles Crane.”
We laughed at its ludicrous perfection, or at least those of us who’d heard him did. David was very quiet, very soft-spoken. Unlike many humor writers who like to think out loud (making it hard for others to think at all), David mulled each comedy challenge in silence, speaking only when he felt he had something good, which he pretty much always did. He brought the same quiet wryness to his conversation and his remarks were all the funnier for his murmured, throwaway delivery. He understood, to paraphrase Dorothy Parker, that a boy’s best friend is his mutter.
He was a wonderful writer, always smart, always witty, the dialogue pitch perfect. Sometimes in the room his usual low-key drollness would give way to bursts of inspired goofiness that were both hilarious and incongruous, like a humanities professor interrupting his lecture on Middlemarch to share his Porky Pig impression. Most of all he understood that a good show wasn’t about jokes; it was about people, and telling stories about them that involve us and surprise us and make us need to know what happens next.
As good a writer as David was, he was an even better person, unfailingly kind and generous. I’ll always be especially grateful for the su…

My whole life, when I've said my name, people have asked, "Were your parents hippies?" And I've said yes. Weird to think that this will soon be an elderly phenomenon. Silver-haired people named Sunshine and Moonbeam, whose parents were part of a bygone movement.

And it was really lovely working with Zulema Scotto Lavina. Her take on the Runaways feels brand new to me. A step more baroque. But still very much in character. I loved her Young Pride outfits, and the way she integrated the Watcher. (Frank William was a perfect match on colors.)

It was an honest-to-goodness treat writing this Runaways What If? story. It gave me a chance to dig into the kids' relationships with their parents. I've always been fascinated by the fact that most of the members of the Pride are really good parents. Canonically. (Love this cover by Lucas Werneck.)
