As I finished Shakespeare in Tongues in 2024, I could sense that my chapter on The Tempest and the 2012 outlawing of the Mexican American Studies curriculum in Tucson, AZ, would become increasingly relevant in this new era of epistemic violence, so I wrote a short piece about it for The Sundial.

Birthright citizenship isn’t only a legal construct, but it’s also a reproductive issue. Any attempt to narrow who qualifies as a citizen necessarily burdens the women whose bodies become the contested sites of national identity. More from Dan-el Padilla Peralta on citizenship and biopolitics:

Because I received a grant from the NEH in the past, I have been asked to serve as a panelist in reviewing applications this year. Here is the email I sent in response to the invitation.
Dear Dr. (redacted)
Many thanks for the kind invitation to serve as a panelist for this year's NEH fellowships and summer stipend competitions.
I have recently seen the revised guidelines for applications to a number of other NEH grants, which restricts research on the following topics:
• promotion of gender ideology
• promotion of discriminatory equity ideology
• support for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEl) or diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) initiatives or activities
• environmental justice initiatives or activities
While I see that the guidelines for the 2025 Fellowships and Summer Stipends programs have not been revised (yet), I do not wish to support an organization that preemptively complies with the discriminatory dictates of an administration that has repeatedly defied the law and flouted the norms of democratic governance in the first month of its installation.
I value the support that the NEH offered me to conduct research free from such ideologically motivated restrictions, and I hope that my refusal to serve and support an esteemed organization may convince those in charge of crafting future application guidelines to resist what one can plainly see is an abuse of power. To comply would be nothing less than a dereliction of our responsibility as scholars in the humanities.
Respectfully,
Sonja Drimmer
