Critical observations on the urbanist movement from someone who's lived in a city, with and without a car, before it became a fad. Philly.

What doesn't make sense about induced demand is that the demand is for the destinations served by a road, not for the road itself. If capacity doesn't match demand, people won't go to desired destinations, limiting growth, snarling traffic, and perhaps causing more sprawl. @jeffspeck.bsky.social

The biggest thing that undercuts the legacy of planning surrounding the Schulkyll RiverTrail, the Schulkyll Banks Park, and Grays Ferry is the railroad that cuts off the city from the park and Grays Ferry from the rest of the city. Get rid of the railroad and viaduct. @ingasaffron.bsky.social

25 years ago there were 3 department stores, a Kmart, and a popular shopping mall on East Market, but @civicgrit.bsky.social thinks parking minimums are the reasons these businesses aren't there any more. Developers will make any opportunistic argument to externalize their parking costs on others.

Somehow, @americanfietser.bsky.social thinks people aren't cycling for transportation because they don't know they can, rather than because they already rejected the idea.

Americans have unprecedented mobility, driving 10 billion miles a day, so we can go more places, do more, and see more people, all of which is impossible without parking. Complaining about traffic is like complaining there's too much selection in the grocery store. @victorfloresbart.bsky.social

If you call undocumented immigrants criminals, you're a bigot. It's not complicated. They're people who have come to the United States to work and are no more prone to criminality than the people who are born here, like our felon president.

That is a misleading post, @momentummag.bsky.social , to imply those cities are relying on cycling. Those are cities with extensive mass transit systems.

Here's @davidzipper.bsky.social looking for support for his predetermined position that people don't like driving. The only people who research these questions are people who already know the answer they want. Do people want to cycle in cold rainy weather, the study says yes. Bullshit.

Critical Urbanism @criticalurbanism.bsky.social · 10/04/2025
I don't know @davidzipper.bsky.social, for decades I've lived in beautiful walkable urban neighborhoods close to highways, and those highways are invaluable when I need to travel to places around the region beyond walking distance. I don't get why you're trying to cripple people's mobility.

Between trucks being able to stop to deliver the billions of consumer goods on which we all depend and bike lanes, I prefer the trucks. I'll look carefully behind me, and I will then cycle around the trunk. Problem solved. @kemcdonell.bsky.social @tomflood.bsky.social

Good riddance. This asshole is as responsible as anyone for getting Roe overturned and putting a cabal of conservative judges in the courts to attack all civil and consumer rights in favor of corporations.

In other words, @typewriteralley.bsky.social, developers got free parking. When developers don't have to build parking, they'll externalize their parking needs on the public to the detriment of the community. I say no free parking for developers.

This piece of developer propaganda repeated verbatim by @pushtheneedle.bsky.social, is demonstrably false. The budget of every large city proves the expenses of density far exceed the economies of scale. He just doesn't want to listen to anyone who tells him otherwise.

In other words, @cafedujord.bsky.social is going to someone else's neighborhood to support an outside developer build housing Mr. Grimes can't afford. Urbanism is always about development in someone else's back yard, and Mr. Grimes is a sucker if he thinks something's gonna trickle down to him.

Critical Urbanism @criticalurbanism.bsky.social · 13/01/2025
If density has the economies of scale promoted by @clmarohn.bsky.social and @strongtowns.org, NYC wouldn't need to create yet another tax to support its parks.

Critical Urbanism @criticalurbanism.bsky.social · 08/01/2025
Developers actually want people to pay to lobby for them to build housing the people can't even afford. There's a sucker born every minute.

Sorry @tomflood.bsky.social, but you cannot be a safety advocate and promote low visibility cycling. Cyclists riding at night without lights just appear to come out of nowhere and are a danger to themselves and pedestrians.

That illustrates @danieltrubman.bsky.social that the adoption of the automobile took place from the ground up because people wanted person on-demand point-to-point transportation. There was no conspiracy. No one has to twist anyone's arm.
000
Critical Urbanism @criticalurbanism.bsky.social · 07/01/2025
The last thing a leftist would do @danieltrubman.bsky.social is work of union busting Ori Fiebush to support private market-rate for-profit real estate development for wealthy people.

Land is a finite resource. No one can make more of it, and every parcel of land is unique. If the lower land prices depend on having more land available for development, only cars can make that possible, since they go everywhere, something mass transit cannot do.

A lot of people don't like cycling up hills, but I gotta say, I ride my brakes when I am heading down a hill. I don't want to go too fast riding a bicycle down roads where hitting one bump too fast could cause you to lose control.

I wonder if we should measure how long it will take faux urbanist @americanfietser.com to leave the suburbs and move into an actual city.

Critical Urbanism @criticalurbanism.bsky.social · 05/01/2025
In this post, urbanist @danieltrubman.bsky.social wishes for another pencil tower in NYC, so there's more abundant housing for the super rich. WTF.

Critical Urbanism @criticalurbanism.bsky.social · 05/01/2025
Urbanists say they want abundant affordable housing, but praising new housing for the wealthy is their stock-in-trade.

Yo @danieltrubman.bsky.social does Ori Fiebush pay you enough to afford to live in one of these units you're happy to see built in the Manyunk flood zone? It floods there all the time, and we're facing more extreme weather. Only a developer pawn could promote this.

Yo @segbydesign.bsky.social , Savannah is in the American South where discrimination and actual segregation were rampant prior to the civil rights movement. Union Station was actually segregated by design with separate black and white waiting areas, and that's the station you want back? WTF.
000
Critical Urbanism @criticalurbanism.bsky.social · 05/01/2025
Yo @segbydesign.bsky.social by design. Savannah is a beautiful walkable city. Check out the great neighborhood a block from the highway ramp you're complaining about. If that's not still a black neighborhood, it looks like the problem is gentrification, not the highway.

Is driving in the US really more dangerous? @davidzipper.bsky.social Americans drive more than people in other countries. The fatality rate on American roads is 0.00000105% based on Americans driving 4 trillion annual miles with 42,000 fatalities.

Land is a finite resource, which has to be fully developed to create vibrant communities with lots of housing and amenities. Yet, a transit dependent community will never be able to develop all of its land because transit lacks the ability to reach an entire region.

Yo Ray, @nerd4cities.bsky.social, cars are the one means of transportation that connect people on demand from an unlimited number of unique locations, allowing more land at more locations to be developed into more housing and amenities than any other mobility. A war against cars is irrational.
000
Critical Urbanism @criticalurbanism.bsky.social · 28/12/2024
At least you're getting pushback on a bad analogy. @drtaragoddard.bsky.social As someone who lives in a walkable and transit rich urban paradise, I can tell you transit does not replace cars. There's only one form of transportation that can take people between a limitless number of unique locations.

The lesson here is that air travel is better than high speed rail for the United States because of how much larger we are than Germany, but somehow @pushtheneedle.bsky.social doesn't see that.

I don't know Ray @nerd4cities.bsk.social, I run and cycle hundreds of miles a year, as well as walk, which probably puts me in the 99th percentile of non sedentary behavior also, but driving is an important mode of transportation for me. It is kooky not to have a vehicle in Las Vegas.

Critical Urbanism @criticalurbanism.bsky.social · 24/12/2024
Yo Ray @nerd4cities.bsky.social what would you rather be dependent upon: Mass transit or a car? "Car dependency" is a nonsensical label. If you "depend" on mass transit, you're "dependent" on a transit agency to tell you where and when you can go, a lot worse form of dependency than having a car.
