For a long time I've wanted a sense of how trump has or hasn't interacted with chatbots (we know he posts a lot of slop sure). And this TIME anecdote about Grok arguably leading Trump into war is just extremely bracing
Since returning to office, Trump has marveled at AI’s capabilities. He is increasingly in thrall to the tech executives courting him. In December 2025, Elon Musk returned to the Oval Office for a clandestine meeting. Trump spent hours asking Grok, Musk’s AI chatbot, questions about his presidency and legacy, according to an official present. At the time, Trump was ordering missile strikes against Venezuelan boats he alleged were smuggling drugs into the U.S. He asked Grok how Venezuelans would react if the U.S. captured Maduro. According to the official present, the chatbot responded that Maduro was a repressive and deeply unpopular dictator and that many Venezuelans would likely celebrate his downfall. After Trump ordered the mission to seize Maduro, the following month, celebrations broke out in the streets. Trump, according to officials, came away thinking Grok was ingenious.

Cox gets into the act too - and fails the same test. The fact that this appeal to unity and friendship was followed by 4 years of war that claimed hundreds of thousands of lives should maybe give you pause about the power of such appeals.
But perhaps Abraham Lincoln made the point more memorably than anyone" "We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection."

Is there any chance, I wondered to myself, that this book foregoes saccharine and mistaken appeals to Abe Lincoln? Nope. In the foreword, Jonathan Haidt invokes the "better angels" line from the First Inaugural, failing - as almost every politician does - the "and what happened next?" challenge.
In the polarized America of today, we desperately need leaders who see this danger, understand its causes, and show us a way out. We need figures who rouse the "better angels of our nature," as Lincoln later put it. We need leaders like Governor Spencer Cox.

In "Ruined" (111 Geo. L.J. 237), I trace how the law's language of "ruin" grew out of a history that treated rape as damage to a woman's chastity and value. That history still tells victims how they're supposed to feel and act.

Victims who were intoxicated or who knew the accused are believed less. Prosecutors also weigh how a future jury will judge the victim. That means community bias gets absorbed into charging decisions, and courts almost never review a decision not to charge.

There are very few incentives, really, to coming forward immediately after a rape has happened. A victim may need time to process. But also police and prosecutors buy into rape myths themselves are find "perfect victims." I go into that in Shamed (111 Va. L. Rev. 325).

The burden is on YOU to establish that you have been admitted, clearly and beyond any doubt. If you can't do that to the satisfaction of executive branch officials, you are detained until removal proceedings begin--again, before exec officials. They may begin that. Very. Day.
Avila v. Bondi, 8th Circuit 2026

In August 2025, DHS encountered Avila during a traffic stop, during which he admitted that he had entered the country illegally and lacked documents authorizing his admission. DHS then arrested Avila, and on the same day, it initiated removal proceedings against him by issuing a Notice to Appear, charging him with removability under 8 U.S.C. § 1182(a)(6)(A)(i), (a)(7)(A)(i)(I) for being an alien present in the United States without being admitted and lacking valid entry documentation. DHS detained Avila without bond while it brought removal proceedings against him.

BREAKING: SCOTUS’s Republican appointees will allow Tennessee to kill Christa Pike tonight, vacating a stay of execution entered by the Sixth Circuit this morning. The three Democratic appointees dissent.
SUPREME COURT OF THE UNITED STATES
No. 26A428
KENNETH NELSEN, WARDEN v. CHRISTA GAIL PIKE
ON APPLICATION TO VACATE STAY
[September 30, 2026]
The application to vacate stay of execution of sentence of death presented to JUSTICE KAVANAUGH and by him referred to the Court is granted. The September 30, 2026 order of the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Cir-cuit, case No. 26-5864, granting a stay of execution is vacated.
JUSTICE SOTOMAYOR, with whom JUSTICE KAGAN and
JUSTICE JACKSON join, dissenting.
The State of Tennessee is set to execute Christa Pike for the 1995 murder of Colleen Slemmer. Earlier today, the Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit issued a stay of Pike's execution solely to "adequately address and resolve" the issues presented in Pike's pending application for relief. Order in In re Pike, No. 26-5864, ECF Doc. 10-2, p. 2. Tennessee now asks this Court to vacate that stay and permit it to proceed with Pike's execution today. Stunningly, the Court acquiesces. Because its decision clears the way for the State to execute Pike before her still-pending legal challenges to her conviction can be properly considered, I respectfully dissent.
