@pbotinfo.bsky.social is at this public works committee saying that no transformative elements on W Burnside rebuilt b/c the rebuild will be phased. I’ve played this game before. Repaving will happen, in 5 years when no one’s paying attention the transformative elements will get quietly cut.

Thank you @councilormorillo.bsky.social for reminding folks that walking in the roadway should not be a death sentence, even when on drugs or otherwise impaired. We need safer street designs, safer vehicles, and safer drivers.

Guys there is not a super-secret epidemic of e-bike fatalities. The 2,000 lb vehicles going 40mph pose a greater threat to pedestrians than the 100lb vehicles going 20mph!

Portland should require AV companies to publicly share this kind of data as part of the upcoming rulemaking. It would be enlightening to see if AVs also use greenways more than other local streets. (They shouldn’t, greenways are not for cars.)

Six years ago, Ahmaud Arbery was jogging. That was enough to be a death sentence. We remember his life, as a constant charge to continue the fight for justice, humanity, accountability, and an end to the poison of white supremacy.

Very relevant to Portland’s current AV rulemaking process, and underscores just how unprepared the state was in their attempt to regulate AVs and preempt local control.

I recorded this today, in Portland, Oregon, at a huge march to the ICE facility in SW. The crowd was full of cyclists who had ridden there in memory of Alex Pretti; members of several labor unions; and ordinary citizens of every age, including this little girl. So of course ICE deployed tear gas.

Local advocacy is more important than ever. It's overwhelming to think about how to fix [motions to everything] but I can make it safer for seniors to cross the street, for kids to bike to school, for people to have places to meet in public space... all of which build and strengthen our democracy.

Plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose. From the 1948 introduction by Lionel Trilling to “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,” published in 1884.
Picture from a book with circled text that reads “None of them was under any illusion about the amount of ordinary human wickedness that existed in the old days, and Mark Twain certainly was not. The difference was in the public attitude, in the things that were now accepted and made respectable in the national ideal. It was, they all felt, connected with new emotions about money. As Mark Twain said, where formerly “the people had desired money,” now they “fall down and worship it.” The new gospel was, “Get money. Get it quickly. Get it in abundance. Get it in prodigious abundance. Get it dishonestly if you can, honestly if you must.”

This is me. Every time I’m tempted to speed because I’m running late I think about how bad I would feel if I injured someone, so I keep poking along at 35 on Barbur Boulevard because that’s the posted speed and tell myself that next time I will leave earlier (spoiler alert: I won’t).

The testimony submitted to the Oregon v Trump case includes a September 21 email by Portland Police Bureau Sergeant Andrew Braun describing the behavior of three right-wing "counterprotestors": Rhein Amacher, Chelly Bouferrache, and Katie Daviscourt.
These 3 counter-protesters continue to be a chronic source of police and medical calls at ICE. Despite repeated advice from officers to stay away from the ICE crowd, they constantly return and antagonize the protesters until they are assaulted or pepper sprayed. They refuse or are reluctant to walk away from these confrontations, even when police are in the area trying to meet with them. They even engage in the same trespassing behavior on federal and trolley property as the main protesters. Aside from the confrontation between opposing protesters, there was no reported activity around ICE that would have otherwise generated a police response.

I think about this sometimes. In San Francisco I took transit a lot, but here we mostly only take it to go downtown, and not even always for that. Medical appointments that take 15 min on a bike would take 30 minimum on transit (26 of which are walking!), or 42 min to minimize walking to 5 minutes.
