I shared this evergreen Streetsblog USA piece with a colleague who used the word "accident" to describe the killing of CDOT Planner Riley O'Neil, biking in a non-protected bike lane, by a driver w/ a suspended license who illegally opened his door w/o checking for traffic. @schmangee.bsky.social

I'm sitting in a forum session right now in Texas on police and traffic enforcement. The panelist, career cop, says police don't want to enforce traffic because the roads are so dangerous now, they're at risk out there. 🙃 FUBAR

I’m on a tour of the walkable Mueller neighborhood in Austin, Texas. The city’s vision zero coordinator is saying the city lowered speed limits (to 25 mph) on 800 residential streets all at once.

I’m a political radical because I think kids should be able to play outside and I think adult drivers should be forced to accept some reasonable constraints to allow that.

With respect to road safety, why are we holding children to a higher safety standard than licensed drivers? Let adults be adults and kids be kids FFS! Not the other way around.

This is a child I know who was killed. The way the news bends over backward to blame the kid and absolve the driver is deeply deeply sick. Our society, idk 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

I see your bad bus stop and raise you this one - in Columbus, Ohio - just metres from the campus of the 3rd largest university in the country. (photo credit: reddit user jigglebits123)
a bus stop on the shoulder of a 4 lane high speed road. two huge puddles, no sidewalk, gravel and mud. in the background there are cars on a fast road, there is blue sky with clouds, a cemetery fence, and a complete disregard for the safety and dignity of people who ride the bus.

Looking at this, the only state that looks like it had a clear sustained improvement is California. State DOT takes this seriously there IMO. About 1/6 ped deaths nationally happen in CA, or did.

Americans are so dependent on oil. Already the price of gas increase is costing Americans an extra $300 million a day at the pump. It’s a (somewhat) regressive cost, because lower income people pay way larger share of their income on gas.

"Child pedestrian and bicyclist deaths declined by 92% and 95%, respectively, since 1975." My theory about this is not that streets have gotten safer, but mostly that we have successfully discouraged children from biking or walking anywhere since then. www.iihs.org/research-are...

Grateful for all of the ways El Cerrito city staff are making our streets safer, like this improvement on Liberty at Waldo. Drivers fly down Liberty, a residential street, avoiding higher traffic streets. These bollards should help slow them down and protect people biking and walking.
