Also, I think some latent religious misgivings, and wanting to leave a positive legacy, would been on their minds.

Yes (not that I need to tell you) that's the problem about trying to triangulate policy like this. You end up talking to small segments of the voter population. Which maybe OK if you are ACT and can join together some dog whistles and ride to 8%. But not so hot for notionally mass movements.

The craziest thing about elections is seeing how many grown adults have been tricked into thinking that their tax money going towards public services that serve them is a bad thing and not the point of taxes. People proudly living worse lives because theyve been convinced a better life is "woke"

I don’t quite see how a LLM could be used to hack RSA like that. Perhaps an LLM could be used to find hackable errors in code that implements RSA. But that is no different to what can already be done (if such errors exist), except the “democratization” of the resources and capability to do it.

Nothing angers me more than when a rich person says they are happy to be taxed more and people say “why don’t you write a check to the government” motherfucker they want everyone in their tax bracket to also write a check to the government because that’s how maths works you fucking numpty.

Yes, I think it is from "professional" recruiters who are interviewing large numbers of people for positions that they do not really understand. So, they have lots of dumb rituals and rules to "objectively" whittle the pool down to a manageable shortlist that they can pass onto their client.

My eyes could not roll harder. a) Soares wrote his doomer book with the Harry Potter fanfic cult guy. b) The comparison is not playing Carlsen or Federer fairly. It's shooting them in the head. Then it doesn't matter how good they are at tennis or chess. www.stuff.co.nz/world-news/3...
“The kill switch sort of works if you know how to use it, and then it only works if the AIs are still only running on the computers you think they’re running on. You’ve also got to be very wary of the AIs sort of playing along while you hand them all the power,” says Soares.

As Soares puts it, debates over exactly how the AI beats humans if it ever becomes a competition between us and them can miss the point. If we make something vastly more intelligent than us, it will simply win.

It’s the same way I can say with certainty that if I played Roger Federer at tennis or Magnus Carlsen at chess, I would lose.

The actual moves they use to beat me are harder to predict, but the outcome is never in question. If we build something smarter than us, it will shape the world, not us.

An ancient listing, flagged in an old cutting from the Guardian, for a job at Southeast Missouri State University, to teach philosophy and religious studies. Startlingly frank.
An old newspaper clipping, apparently from the Guardian:

ENCLOSED is an announcement of a tenure-track position in philosophy at the rank of assistant professor. We hope to fill this position rapidly... We are more interested in looking at candidates with real teaching experience than in newly minted PhD's, who might have unrealistic expectations about the possibilities for academic growth at an institution such as ours. Southeast Missouri State University is a regional university which serves students in the southeast portion of the state including St Louis.
Our students tend to be poorly prepared for college level work, intellectually passive, interested primarily in partying, and culturally provincial in the extreme. We offer a major in philosophy, but do not usually have more than two students officially declared as majors at any given time... We also offer a rellgious studies minor; most of the students who declare this minor are shocked to learn that Moses might not have written the Pentateuch and regard higher criticism as secular humanist propaganda.
The academic environment at
SEMO is distinctly non-intellectual - somewhat like a Norman Rockwell painting— and the candidate cannot expect to attract students by offering courses that assume innate curiosity about ideas and books, or intellectual playful-ness, or independence of moral and political thought.
