"Ours is a time of lists—of 'deep state' figures to be prosecuted, media outlets to be exiled, and gender identities to be outlawed," @juliaangwin.com and I wrote in The New Yorker last year. ADL now drafting lists of its political enemies – broadly for speech critical of Israel – is a sad day.

I’m genuinely wondering how many elections—in Michigan especially—the Democrats are going to have to lose until they’re willing to be adults and have an adult conversation about how unbelievably racist against Muslims the party is

Jane Bennett has entered the chat
The cover of Jane Bennett’s Vibrant Matter. The title and author name vertically bookend a photo of an art installation in which a series of large rocks are arranged in a grid. The rocks hover at various heights, suspended by invisible thread, imposing a gradient that runs from one corner to another.

I find it interesting that at a time when many of the KCRHA's staff are about to lose their jobs, their CEO's email to staff focuses primarily on claiming the media are biased and can't be trusted. Imagine worrying about your job and receiving a rant against the media instead of real information.

The City of Chicago can't say exactly how much lead pipe replacement costs, can't say how many pipes they've actually replaced, and can't explain why it costs 6x the national average. But one city official is very confident that critics "don't know what they're talking about."

Why is it so unusually expensive to replace lead pipes in Chicago?
The city with the most lead pipes in the nation is paying way above average to fix them. Officials can't fully explain why.

This piece builds on our earlier investigation, where we mapped every known lead line in the city. The toxic pipes hit majority-Black and Latino neighborhoods hardest. You can search your own address to see your risk: grist.org/accountabili... 5/n

At the current pace and price, removing all of Chicago's lead pipes will top $12 billion... against a federal deadline of ~20 years. Critics say the city is being opaque about its costs and isn't treating the gap as a priority. As one NRDC advocate put it: "It is absurd." 4/n

That last point shows up in the data: Nearly all of Chicago's ~15,000 replacements from 2021–25 happened piecemeal, mostly during emergency leak/break repairs. The dedicated whole-block program accounted for just 3% of the total. 3/n
Line chart titled "Replacements under the breaks and leaks program have ramped up faster than other city initiatives" and subtitled "Monthly lead service line replacements by program, 2021–25," using City of Chicago DWM data. Six colored lines track monthly replacements by program. The "Breaks and leaks" line (green) dominates, rising sharply from near zero in early 2023 to repeated peaks above 400 by 2025. All other programs stay far lower: "Sewer and water main" (orange) and "Equity" (purple) climb into the 100–180 range at times, while "Homeowner-initiated" (blue), "Block-level" (black), and "Daycare" (red) mostly stay under 75. The chart shows that emergency break-and-leak repairs account for the vast majority of replacements, far outpacing every other program.

We surveyed 18 other major cities (Detroit, Milwaukee, NYC, etc). Their costs ran $6K–$25k per line: most less than half of Chicago's. Likely culprits are inefficient early contracts, permitting costs, and replacing pipes one at a time (instead of whole blocks). 2/n

New from @juanpab.bsky.social, @keertigopal.bsky.social, and me: Chicago has the most lead pipes of any U.S. city... and pays wildly more than anyone else to replace them: ~$31,000 per line, more than 6x the EPA's nat'l est. of $4,700. Officials can't fully explain why. grist.org/accountabili... 1/n

I keep thinking about this quote from @drkatemarvel.bsky.social. Climate scientists have been gaslit by so many parties for so long that it has worn on their gifts of critical thinking and introspection. Today, perhaps, anger is lighting new fires. "Maybe we didn't do anything that wrong." Indeed.
A quote from Dr. Kate Marvel: "We are trained to be introspective. We are trained to always think: Oh my gosh, that’s a mistake; can I fix this mistake? But that means we also probably waste a lot of mental energy thinking, “What did we do wrong?” when maybe we didn’t do anything that wrong."

Look, I think spite is actually a great motivation to not give up. You look at who wants you to despair, who wants you to say, “Well, we’re going to take the L on this one.” Look at those people. Do you like those people? Do you want to make those people happy? Absolutely not.
Oh, you want me to despair? Fuck you.
