Overnight, a masked bandit broke into our kitchen. Armed with opposable thumbs, he proceeded to sample everything on offer. I’d just visited the farmers market, so the menu was extensive. I can now share a highly specific peer-reviewed list of what this particular raider did & did not enjoy. 🧵

When the story of why humanity didn't stop climate change is written, it will feature front pages like this. Even as the skies blacken with climate change-induced wildfires, right wing media continue their relentless crusade against measures to tackle it.
The Times: Net zero risks blackouts. Below a photo of French wildfires.

It was inevitable, wasn't it🙄 Of course the Telegraph would run with something like this👇 So let's remove some of the rose-tinted spectacles and also look at some of that data comparing 1976 with modern heat waves Because the 1976 nostalgia porn is wearing a bit thin at this stage 🧵1/23
Telegraph headiline:

"Heatwave hysterics wouldn't have lasted a day in 1976", overlaid with a bold “MONK DEBUNKED” stamp.

Think of CO₂ removal like a time machine. How far back does planting 100 million trees take us? One mature tree takes up ~25 kg of CO₂/year, so 100 million trees will take up 2.5 MtCO₂. That's a time machine that takes us back ~33 minutes in a year. Nature will not save us from fossil fuel CO₂.

On the left, a piece of lumpy crystalline pyrite. On the right, a twinned pyrite cube. They both have eyes and mouths drawn on them. The one on the left also has a pirate hat, a dagger and looks angry. Its speech bubble says , "Arrr! It's a pyrite's life for me!" The pyrite cube on the right looks worried and replies, "You fool! You'll never find any gold!"

To do this, anti-trans lawmakers in Kansas moved fast to change the law, overrode the governor’s veto, and pushed for the legal changes to go into effect nearly immediately. That kind of power—to void gender on official documents, to compel gender conformity—is terrifying and it will not stop here.

I still struggle to comprehend it.

grok 2 vs grok 3
Grok 2's conclusion: Climate change is not a distant threat—it is happening now, and its impacts are intensifying. It threatens human health, economies, ecosystems, and global stability. While the challenge is immense, solutions exist, and immediate action can still make a difference. Governments, businesses, and individuals must act urgently to reduce emissions, adapt to changes, and build a sustainable future. The cost of inaction far outweighs the cost of action, and the time to act is now.conclusion: So, urgent threat? If you buy the consensus, yes-time's ticking, and impacts are already here. If you're skeptical, it's more of a manageable shift we're overreacting to. Data's there on both sides; it's about what risks you're willing to bet on. What do you think?

I think most people (myself included) don’t have an intuition for orders of magnitude (e.g., the difference between millionaire and billionaire). One way to appreciate this is time, since we all experience it. Here's the difference between a thousand, a million, and a billion seconds.
The image presents a comparison of time represented in seconds: 1 thousand seconds is approximately 17 minutes, 1 million seconds is about 11.6 days, and 1 billion seconds is roughly 31.7 years.
