By being open and shameless about living with HIV we can help to dispel the fear and ignorance that leads to stigma. Interview clip from 2021 (with fleeting appearance by my dear friend @andrewkeates.bsky.social).

The ability to treat HIV effectively must be one of the greatest medical achievements of my lifetime. On treatment I have about the same life expectancy as someone without HIV. What’s more, HIV treatment means there is NO RISK of passing HIV on to sexual partners. #UequalsU How fantastic is that?

When I was diagnosed with HIV, aged 30, I was told I could expect to live for another 20 years. Today I turn 59. HIV treatment works. Science saves lives. Tell everyone.
Me, shortly before my 30th birthday and around the time I believe I acquired HIV.
In this black and white photo, I’m dressed up in black tie (although no actual tie) ready to go to a fancy event. My suit was hired.
This may be the most handsome photo of me that there is, which is why I’m happy to share it. A workout photo, taken 25 July this year. I’m wearing a vest. I have a small moustache and fairly large biceps.

It's a collective psychopathy, which treats disabled people, elderly people and people with long-term conditions as disposable. We see it in the Covid-19 pandemic. We see it in the heatwaves. Their deaths are inconvenient reminders that a favoured policy is disastrous. So they must be dismissed.

After I wrote last week's column, I learnt that a neighbour with severe disabilities, an extremely tough & resourceful woman who lived to the full, died in the heatwave. Everyone here is devastated. I can scarcely express my anger towards a mindset that treats people like her as collateral damage. 🧵

An HIV diagnosis is no longer a death sentence. We need to share the good news that treatment will prevent AIDS. We must challenge fear by ensuring that everyone knows effective treatment means we can’t pass HIV on to our sexual partners (#UequalsU). 12/13

It was AIDS that killed those men, but it was homophobia that allowed it to happen – and that led to so many men dying alone. Homophobia killed us then. Worldwide, it remains the cause of thousands of deaths, through violence and neglect, even today. 11/13

heartbroken to learn the pope sympathizes with the poor. how can i continue to believe in god
The Pope tweets: "The poor are not there by chance or by blind and cruel fate. Nor, for most of them, is poverty a choice. Yet, there are those who still presume to make this claim, thus revealing their own blindness and cruelty. #DilexiTe"

Someone replies: "I was so hopeful I could be a Catholic again after the disaster that Francis was, guess we just get Francis 2.0 now and I am heartbroken. How do I stay a Catholic now...I don't want to lose faith but I am. You belong to someone else, not God."
