During the summer I will plan bike routes around shaded areas, especially intersections/red lights where I'm going to be stopped for a period of time. It is the difference between staying somewhat cool and getting absolutely soaked in sweat.

why do i leave it on my ebike? because it's secured in the frame with a lock and key and weighs almost 5kg. i'm not carrying that thing around if i don't absolutely have to

We don't need Prop 45 to build new housing - recent state laws have already streamlined approval of new homes in existing cities and suburbs. Instead, Prop 45 would rubber stamp sprawl in wildfire zones, and make California's insurance crisis worse. Vote No on 45.

What's all this traffic? Why isn't this line of cars moving when they have the green light? Would ya look at that, it's drivers blocking the intersection, because drivers get in each other's way and delay each other far more than somebody on a bicycle has ever delayed a driver.

The worst part of Bonta caving on the Paramount merger is that it's a big flashing signal to every other company that there is no antitrust enforcement in America and you can bully your way into getting whatever you want. It's a monumentally bad decision.

If one of the "rewards" of affluence is that you get to opt out of the services everyone else uses -- roads & transit, aviation system, schools, healthcare, etc. -- then those services are inevitably starved of resources & decline. We have to force affluent people to be invested in them.

i mean, just look at how the populists talked about the railroad barons and others like them. "The fruits of the toil of millions are boldly stolen to build up colossal fortunes, unprecedented in the history of the world, while their possessors despise the republic and endanger liberty."

Anyone using weather as an excuse to advocate against safe biking infrastructure is a counterfactual asshole. Some of the cities around the world that have the highest rates of transit riding have real winter conditions. Riders deserve to get home alive even if it is chilly out.

People constantly claim that having a child makes biking impossible. The reality is that the only thing restricting your mobility is hostile city infrastructure. Streets have the power to either give you safe transportation options or force you into a car for every single errand.

what's actually hideous is how many people are homeless in SF and how many more are struggling to pay rent. folks like this making it harder to build housing have been making that the inevitable outcome for decades and appear content to let it fester

This seems absurdly simple, but: Republicans talk *all the time* about how Democrats are bad. Not this or that individual Democrat, but the party, the ideology, the very idea of Democrats. Democrats almost never do this about Republicans. Not in a coordinated, concerted way.

totally understand the need for these tactics for unsafe situations, but i kinda recoil seeing the prescribed distance here is 300 feet. really, a whole football field? seems way excessive.
section from the CPH website linked to by the post this is a reply to. the highlighted section: "Remember you can be cited if you fail to stay 300 ft behind an emergency vehicle when its lights and or siren are activated. California Vehicle Code 21706."

everyone is saying seasons, which obviously explains the basic cyclicality, but no one is mentioning the zig zag. why is there a mini-spike after the big spike every year? it's happened every year since 2017 w/ the exception of 2020. if it were truly seasonal we'd expect a simple peak-crest pattern
