totally understand the need for these tactics for unsafe situations, but i kinda recoil seeing the prescribed distance here is 300 feet. really, a whole football field? seems way excessive.
section from the CPH website linked to by the post this is a reply to. the highlighted section: "Remember you can be cited if you fail to stay 300 ft behind an emergency vehicle when its lights and or siren are activated. California Vehicle Code 21706."

best of luck with the blog! having mixed feelings about your sponsor. obvs the aim is good, but since when do we need AI for automated enforcement? if anything i would imagine it would be less accurate and reliable than existing programming that was bespoke to the task and has a lengthy track record

hoboken proved how easy and cheap (~$20 per corner) it is to fix this kind of thing and continues to shame every city that makes excuses for why 'it just has to be this way'
looking down the street from an intersection in hoboken, new jersey where so-called "daylighting" has been implemented. we see 3 white flexposts at the edge of a lane-sized diagonally-striped yellow zone that gives pedestrians and drivers ample space and time to see one another before they enter a potential conflict in the crosswalk and forces drivers to take the turn wider than they might otherwise

imma just leave the tweets you're referring to here so anyone reading can decide for themselves whether he's calling for a "red/brown" alliance, or for a limited coalition to "stop the militarism of foreign wars of choice [and] hold the Epstein class accountable" despite "serious disagreements"
tweet from Ro Khanna, april 7 2026 at 5:01pm PT: "Trump backed down.

No credit to Congress, which barely made a whimper.

Credit to the American people—progressive activists & anti-war conservative voices like
@TuckerCarlson
,
@mtgreenee
, and many more.

We need an anti-Epstein class, anti-war, pro-working class coalition."Ro Khanna's quote retweet april 9, 2026 at 10:31am PT of Marjorie Taylor Green's reply to his april 7 tweet, with his reply text being: "Thank you for reaching out and for your kind words. Your voice against this war in Iran and for the survivors of the Epstein class has made a difference. It was courageous.

As you know my politics are about creating prosperity for left out Americans who have been shafted and tackling the massive economic divide. I call it a New Economic Patriotism.

I am willing to work with people of good will from both parties or no party to advance that vision, understanding we will certainly have serious disagreements on many individual issues and our general view of the role government can play. Spirited debate is what this nation is about.

Look forward to a dialogue on how to stop the militarism of foreign wars of choice, hold the Epstein class accountable, and actually deliver for the millions of working class Americans who built our nation.

I am game."

i think the mystery evaporates when we think about how the average consumer sees the economy *going*, not how it is today. they see the war already hitting fuel prices and are anticipating it bleeding into other prices (you can already see the upswing in expected inflation in the michigan survey)...

'historic' is a little iffy here, it's low-ish, but that is masking a low-hire, low-fire environment. people who have good jobs are mostly able to hang onto them but finding a new job has been getting much harder. and jobless rate for new grads is worse than it was in the wake of the dot com bust
a chart plotting US hires, quits, and layoffs as a share of total employment over the period 2000-2026. we see hiring rates have been falling since about 2021 and are now at the lowest they have been since 2015 (excluding the giant down-then-up whipsaw that happened in 2020 due to covid). meanwhile the rate of layoffs has stayed relatively low. together these point to a low-hire-low-fire job marketa plot of the unemployment rates for recent college graduates and all college graduates over the period 1989 to 2025. we see the rates for both have been steadily climbing since about 2021. despite not reaching the heights seen in the wake of the great recession, nor the blip-like spike seen during covid, they are sufficiently elevated to look worse than anything seen in the fallout of the dot com bubble's burst circa 2000

i agree they've made flying far less safe, but the gap was ginormous, it's probably only a little smaller now. i think it's easy for us to discount just how dangerous driving is because we're inured by its ubiquity in everyday life

why would this make them more aggressive? anyway, the empirical reality is that there are far fewer drivers on the streets, and the ones that are there are saving lots of time, and they seem to be pretty happy about it
an excerpt of an article from marketplace.com: Nearly four months after the city first started charging people to drive into Manhattan below 60th Street, public opinion about congestion pricing is shifting. Thirty-seven percent of all New York City voters support it now, according to a recent poll from the Partnership for New York City, more than before it went into effect. And among those who actually drive into the zone a few times a week and pay the toll, 66% are in favor.
“Folks who commute from New Jersey or Long Island or the Hudson Valley see that they're saving time,” said Tom Wright, president and CEO of the nonprofit Regional Plan Association.
Fewer cars and trucks are driving into Midtown and lower Manhattan these days, and traffic is moving faster. Standing downtown on Canal Street on a recent weekday afternoon, traffic was flowing.
“Six months ago, Canal Street was a parking lot”

looking at single-year age buckets, we do see the extremely troubling fact that t did win teenage voters who aren't women of color. probably has more than a little something to do with how much people are now using tiktok to get their news
