Little blue heron (Egretta caerulea) on bare tree snag CREW pen flint strand marsh Bonita Springs, Florida 9-19-26 Alan has chosen #LightAndShadow as today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme: any bird capture with both. Alt. #FallBirds: Autumn/Fall bird captures. #eck #nature #threeWordGenre #birding #birds
Little blue heron in breeding plumage perched upright facing its left on the branch of a bare, dark, gnarled tree snag. The bird is viewed in full profile, showing a long, sharp bill and a distinctive shaggy crest of feathers on the crown of its head. Strong side-lighting creates a dramatic light and shadow effect, casting its deep slate-blue body and legs into a dark silhouette while softly illuminating the textures along the edge of its neck, back, and head. Large, unmistakable woodpecker. Mostly black, with red crest and bold white stripes on head and neck. Flies with deep, rowing wingbeats, almost like a crow but more irregular; also look for mostly white underwings and white patches on upperwing. Pairs inhabit mature deciduous or coniferous forests with large trees. Makes large oval-shaped holes in decaying trees to search for insects. Listen for slow resonant drumming and loud clucking calls. Occasionally visits feeders in appropriate habitat, especially fond of suet.

The bird's back and wings are visible, showing its characteristic buff and chestnut plumage, with dark, contrasting flight feathers. Its long, pale legs are gripping the stalk, and its head is hidden among the tall, green cattail leaves. Strong, dappled sunlight casts distinct shadows across its back. A tiny Goldcrest perched on a slender branch, surrounded by lush green leaves. The bird’s delicate greyish-buff plumage is softly illuminated, with a vivid yellow-orange crown stripe catching the light. Its fine, pointed bill and large dark eye are clearly visible as it looks upward, while its fine feathers glow against the darker, softly blurred woodland background. The natural shadows create a beautiful, intimate woodland portrait.

Today's #BirdOfTheDay is #CaptionThatBird 🪶 1. Post any of your bird 📷 that make you smile 2. Add ONLY a witty caption & hashtags 3. ⚠️Please describe your photo in the Alt Text so everyone can enjoy the theme 🙏 Have fun! ☺️ “Dammit Gary, get your wing out of my face! I'm flying blind back here!"
A photo of four Greylag geese flying in a neat, diagonal line across a clear, pale blue sky. The birds are captured mid-flight in various stages of their wingbeats. The bright daylight highlights the textures of their mottled grey-brown feathers, white tails, and stout orange bills. A comical optical illusion occurs between the front two birds due to the camera's perspective. The leading goose's downward-extended wing perfectly overlaps the head of the second goose flying closely behind it. This creates a funny visual effect, making it look as though the front bird is covering the second bird's face with its wing so it cannot see where it is going. The remaining two geese follow further down the line, one with its wings angled upward and the other downward.

The background is mown grass, with a large rock poking out of the grass to the left of the shot and a stone path along the top. A Rook standing on decaying seaweed in the bright sunshine.
The bird is in side profile, looking left so that the left side of its body is visible. The bird has a long, sharp beak and jet-black plumage that has a purple or metallic blue sheen in the sunlight. I'm going for a #twofer with this Black-winged Stilt (Himantopus himantopus) for today's #BirdOfTheDay. Not only is it #Black&White but the wings show #Iridescence in certain light. It also happens to have the longest legs on a bird relative to body size. 😀 #birds #ECK #nature #photography #wildlife
A bird with white head and body, and black wings. It has extremely long orange legs and is standing by the edge of dark blue water on a rocky foreshore. Its long black beak is slightly open, and it has a light brown eye. It's facing left, and the early morning sun is catching its left wing transforming the black to dark green with hints of purple.
The claim about the longest legs relative to body size is supported by the Guiness Book of Records.

A vertical photograph of two small, brown birds perched along the same horizontal thorny stem of a bramble on the edge of a rural field. The background is softly blurred, transitioning from a warm, golden-brown field in the middle ground to a deep green foliage layer at the very top from distant woodland. The bird on the left is a tiny, compact Eurasian wren in slight side profile facing left. It features mottled brown plumage with subtle dark barring across its back and wings. Its short, pointed tail is slightly upturned, and a prominent pale stripe runs just above its dark eye. To the right, a slightly larger Dunnock perches higher on the same stem also facing toward the left but more with its back towards the camera. It has a more elongated body with heavily streaked dark brown and tan feathers across its back and wings. The bramble stem cuts horizontally across the lower third of the frame, lined with sharp, reddish thorns and clusters of green, serrated leaves. In the immediate foreground, and just in front of the birds are out-of-focus stalks of wild grasses creating a natural frame.
