My kids are rapidly aging out of CBeebies but I couldn’t resist going to see the CBeebies Christmas panto in Liverpool yesterday- it was Treasure Island and starred ✨Andy✨ and they both absolutely loved it.
View of the stage with a nautical set. Two kids wearing pirate headbands standing outside the theatre. Two kids standing in front of the Empire Theatre.

This morning I went to an event for Women in Cycling Groups run by Cycling UK. It was inspiring hearing all the initiatives happening across Manchester to encourage everyone to cycle. We all face the same barriers though.
A huge paper poster with the words Women in Cycling Groups written in the centre and doodles and notes around the outside about cycling and barriers.

Was quite pleased with myself for putting tonight’s tea in the slow cooker this morning but I’ve realised it means I spend all day working from home with delicious smells all around me. All I can think about is food!

A new gentrification index unlocked: zero same-sex families on our street when we moved in 12 years ago; the third same-sex family in addition to us just moved in last weekend.

Discussing our choices for funeral songs (as you do) and I really want someone to record a choral version of The World Inside a Book by Julia Donaldson for my funeral. It would be epic - and emotional. My other choice is But You Know I Love You by Dolly Parton. That’ll get them sobbing.

The Facial Expressions of Tethys by artist Julius von Bismarck. A suspended high-sea buoy that moves in real time. Sensors on a twin buoy out in the Atlantic Ocean send live satellite data to motors inside the museum. This makes the indoor buoy copy the exact, real-time movements of the ocean waves.

being so fr when I say that transmisogyny has put feminism back like 50 years

seravph
what i thought we had distanced ourselves from was the reduction of women to vaginas and wombs and the ability to bear children. i thought we had progressed past 'dresses are for women and pants are for men. i thought we progressed past the idea that someone is less of a woman if she does not adhere strictly to beauty standards. i thought we progressed past the idea that naturally being comfortable adhering to highly feminine standards is vulgar. but i (sarcastically) guess no one could have predicted that trans-exclusive feminism would be the downfall of all the progress we've made

Okay I’m absolutely loving Ted Lasso. Y’all were quite right. Can’t believe I’m so invested in a show about football and actual football players. It’s a refreshing change to watch a show that’s so warm and positive for once.

I spent the weekend at the beautiful Ilam Hall which is actually a YHA these days and the perfect place for walking. My mum and I enjoyed lots of walking and chatting and cups of tea.
View of a historic hall surrounded by grass. View of the Italian gardens at Ilam hall and hills in the distance. A selfie of me and my mum with White Nancy behind us - a white monument on top of a hill near Macclesfield. Me stood on stepping stones at Dovedale with a stream between the stones and hills behind me.

This weekend I have been for a walk with a friend, a bike ride with a new cycle group and a run. This is probably my ideal level of regular activity- outdoors, mostly social, and varied. It’s a shame I can’t manage that every weekend!
The Macclesfield canal and tow path disappear under a stone bridge. My bike is leaning against a brick wall with a mural painted on it of mountains and a graffiti tag. My eight year old jogs ahead of me down a muddy path surrounded by trees.

Dolly Parton on funding education and childhood literacy programs: My daddy was the smartest man I have ever known, but I knew his inability to read probably kept him from seeing all of his dreams come true. Inspiring kids to love to read became my mission.

I really love the song Dakota by Stereophonics but haven’t heard it for years… until this week where I’ve heard it twice: in the swimming pool and in a kids’ trampoline park. The songs of my youth are now easy-listening background music!

In our area we can request books from other local libraries as much as we want without charge so I reserve tonnes of books under the 8yo’s name. Today we were in the library as the books were dropped off & two different librarians came over to hand-deliver a book for him. I think they know his name!

We arrived at a country park in North Wales today and pulled up at the same time as a two-mum family with two little kids. They were then joined by another two-mum family with one kid. We watched enviously as they set off for a walk together - we’ve still never found a family to go for walks with!

Forgiving infrastructure assumes people make mistakes. A person on a bike who loses their balance and falls shouldn't pay for it with their life just because there was no buffer between them and a vehicle 100 times their weight.

Bus and train windows should never be covered with advertising wrappers. I’m fine with selling ad space on the sides - I’ll take public transit funding where I can - but covering the windows makes it worse for riders. It takes away the pleasure of watching the city & makes it harder to see my stop.

I think about Lily every time I see a delivery truck parked in a bike lane. What if we enforced traffic laws before children were killed 💔
Bike lane tickets increased to $250 after the 2022 death of 3-year-old Lily Grace Shambrook, who was killed in a traffic crash while riding on the back of her mother’s bike in Uptown. The bike lane was blocked by a ComEd truck illegally parked in the bike lane, according to police.

I should follow up to say, if we want to open our front doors for children to play, we should make (temporarily) closing streets to cars easier, we should ensure there are welcoming, playable spaces within (independent) walking distance, and we should make local walking and cycling routes safe.
