After many years of watching the Great British Bake Off, I think I’ve figured out biscuit/cookie terminology.

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

Hmph. Auto correct changed my message from “Happy birthday” to “Happy Belated”. I feel judged.

“Does this look normal?” - overheard from the construction site across the street. Fortunately, they were just putting up fencing and not doing anything that LOOKED dangerous. Hopefully, it was somebody’s first day.

I read an article in the Washington Post today that is still pissing me off. “Reduce your risk of dementia by avoiding these 3 risk factors”. Their brilliant advice? Avoid getting high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes, and who the fuck even cares about the third one.

I’ve been learning a tai chi sword set for the last couple of months. Learning the moves and their martial origins is super fun, but I feel very awkward since I’m learning this in my 50s, not my teens 1/5

Bus and train windows should never be covered with advertising wrappers. I’m fine with selling ad space on the sides - I’ll take public transit funding where I can - but covering the windows makes it worse for riders. It takes away the pleasure of watching the city & makes it harder to see my stop.

DOT cranks up its campaign to strip bike lane references from federal websites
Transportation officials have removed a growing list of safety materials that mention bike lanes from federal websites. Safety advocates warn that's undermining proven measures for reducing crashes.

Tip for newcomers moving to the US, particularly New England - it’s a FIFE and drum band, not a PIPE and drum band. And a fife is most definitely not a tin whistle. Or a piccolo. #LearnFromMyMistakes

I recently had a trip to New York with a friend to do a little sightseeing and to see the Lost Boys musical on Broadway (photos coming soon). I loved the musical, in all its big, loud 1980s glory.

No shade to those who love them, but I find Hoka shoes to be the footwear equivalent of a daily fiber supplement. I do it to avoid future pain and can acknowledge that some varieties are more tolerable than others, but get zero pleasure out of the experience.

I’ve been low-key obsessed with the #LostBoys musical that recently opened on Broadway. When I tell people about it, there is a clear generational divide in whether they respond with confusion or if their eyes light up at the news. 😆

The Somerville Open Studio is a real showcase of the fantastic artists in the area. We spent a lovely afternoon walking and looking at paintings, pottery, and fabric art and barely scratched the surface of what the festival has to offer.

Well, it has been A WEEK. The sitting president of the United States, Donald Trump, called for the destruction of an entire country. An entire civilization. I don't know how to express how horrific this is. The fact that he backed off from this (for now) does not make it ok. It does not make US ok.

I made a fancy lentil roll for supper tonight. Puff pastry from a box, but I made the filling (lentils, carrots, onions, celery, garlic and thyme) and assembled it. I want to fine tune the recipe a little for next time, but it was good enough that there WILL be a next time 😁

My husband suggested building an ADU in our small backyard and installing a putting green on its roof. I’m not convinced on the practicality of the plan. Though I do applaud the effort of balancing the need for more housing with his hobby, golf.

It’s easy to applaud when horrible people are attacking each other. As Sun Tzu wrote, when your enemies are making a mistake, don’t interrupt. But don’t for a minute let them get away with framing current circumstances as “the new Trump.” They always knew he was awful… He just wasn’t awful to them.

People really need to learn the difference between an individual exercising caution (e.g. wearing high-viz) and official messaging which advocates that behavior as a way to absolve drivers or avoid making necessary design changes
