In Berkeley, you don’t need to own a bike to ride one | City of Berkeley
Rent bikes for short, one-way rides between 48 bike share stations spread across Berkeley’s 10 square miles. Avoid worries of maintenance, parking, or theft. No bike? No problem. People who’d like to bike but don’t own one can rent from docking stations now available in even more areas of Berkeley.Use them for one-way trips, errands, rides around town, or commuting to cities in the station network, including Oakland and Emeryville. If BART or AC Transit stops seem too far to walk, bike share can take you that first or last mile home.

I don't have to go the extra mile since I get cheaper fuel in my driveway, charging my electric car. I pay around 8¢ per mile in fuel costs, compared to 20¢ of gasoline in a car that gets 30 mpg (at $6 per gallon).
