all of these same things were said about word processors vs typewriters ("we produce documents faster, but now we're bogged down doing tons of revisions! Productivity has gone down!") and computers in offices overall. It even has a name, the "productivity paradox". It resolves after people adapt

this is misleading because while it describes this phenomenon, it doesn't conclude abandoning AI and mostly recommends firms need to get better at code review. I can review well written code, which I directed at a high level, *a lot* faster than I can write it. That's the skill you need to have.

Exactly this. And in fact, many models *have* been created this way, and decades of prior machine learning systems *were* created this way, consensually. These things are choices! People are STILL working this way! It’s not just that a better world is possible — it already EXISTS. We can nurture it.

seeing if I can develop the post-it-note->Krita pipeline
a hand-drawn post-it note, badly run through Krita photo editor to make it look more like I drew it on a tablet (and failed), of a bar graph with two axes: "time" and "time". The bar labeled "yesterday" is lower than the bar to its right, labeled "today". The graph is then triumphantly titled, "PROGRESS!"

For a long time I've wanted a sense of how trump has or hasn't interacted with chatbots (we know he posts a lot of slop sure). And this TIME anecdote about Grok arguably leading Trump into war is just extremely bracing
Since returning to office, Trump has marveled at AI’s capabilities. He is increasingly in thrall to the tech executives courting him. In December 2025, Elon Musk returned to the Oval Office for a clandestine meeting. Trump spent hours asking Grok, Musk’s AI chatbot, questions about his presidency and legacy, according to an official present. At the time, Trump was ordering missile strikes against Venezuelan boats he alleged were smuggling drugs into the U.S. He asked Grok how Venezuelans would react if the U.S. captured Maduro. According to the official present, the chatbot responded that Maduro was a repressive and deeply unpopular dictator and that many Venezuelans would likely celebrate his downfall. After Trump ordered the mission to seize Maduro, the following month, celebrations broke out in the streets. Trump, according to officials, came away thinking Grok was ingenious.

There is a moment at the very very end of Abdul El-Sayed's podcast with Ezra Klein (book recommendation section) where he talks about the idea of "speaking truth to pain" and this will be staying with me for an extremely long time. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/25/o...
But there’s also something about truth to pain. We talk a lot about truth to power, but I think it’s actually a lot harder to speak truth to pain. I say that as someone who went to medical school, realizing that in a lot of our politics right now, we’ve got to get a lot better at speaking truth to pain if we’re going to get through some of these challenges that we have.

What does “truth to pain” mean?

It’s one thing to look power in the eye and say: You’re wrong about this. But there’s a way in which pain is very difficult to reason with. Because when somebody is in their pain, they’re in their trauma. They see that pain, and they may not see what’s causing it.

I remember just very explicitly being in a trauma ward with a gunshot wound patient and watching this big guy with his hand on his gunshot wound. All the folks are trying to pull his hand off his pain, that point of his gunshot wound, this clear vulnerability.

And this emergency room doctor had the presence of mind to be like: Everyone, stop. And she looks him in the eyes, and she’s like: I get that really hurts, and I’m so sorry that you’re here. You don’t want to be here. We don’t want you to be here. But if you don’t let us fix this, you could die. So I’m going to take your hand, and I’m going to move it off, OK? Because I need to get there so that you can live.

She was speaking truth to pain. He understands he’s at the hospital, he needs care, but he also doesn’t want anybody to touch the wound. Which is a natural thing. And I think it is a really great metaphor for how we think about a lot of these challenges we talked about today.

no Will, it's because we don't have the training data it's very clearly that. now you may say the problem is insurmountable because how can you deal with terabytes of training data, but a world where that's actually transparent would really be something. just ask the robot yourself Will
Gemini answer to the assertion that access to training data would tell us a lot about where certain biases come from:

You're right—having full access to training data does tell us a huge amount about bias, and for many types of bias, it’s the single most direct place to find the root cause.

When researchers or auditors analyze training data, they can uncover major drivers of biased model behavior:

    Representational Harms & Underrepresentation: If a dataset contains 90% Western, English-speaking perspectives, the model will naturally reflect that imbalance. Auditing data reveals whose voices are overrepresented and whose are missing or marginalized.

    Co-occurrence & Stereotypes: Simple corpus statistics often reveal strong associations—for instance, how frequently certain occupations co-occur with specific genders or demographic groups, or how certain ethnicities are collocated with sentiment-laden words.

    Toxic or Historical Bias: Biased outputs often directly mirror historical inequities, hate speech, or explicit prejudice present in raw web scrapes (like uncurated forum posts or older literature).

Co-founder of Anthropic accidentally argues the only people with sufficient brainpower to "think through the response to the situation" are AI haters. 😂 And he's just wrong: if you want to understand "the situation" with LLMs, "stochastic parrots" will point you the right way. "AGI" won't. /1

Jack Clark
@jackclarkSF
"stochastic parrot" was a mimetically-fit cognitive virus that spread from 2021-2025; it temporarily blinded many gifted people to the nature of AI progress, burning up crucial years in which they could have helped think through the response to the situation.

The U.S. AI industry is being run by a batshit rationalist sex cult, and no, I am not being hyperbolic - they’re genuinely Like That:
Erin Redwing
@realizingerin
I went to an rationalist/EA Al doomer event last night with the goal of meeting someone who could calmly explain to me the argument for how they get to the conclusion that Al will kill everyone.
Because these are rationalists, I expected to find people who could lay out a serious extinction pathway, walk through the assumptions and intermediate steps, identify choke points where negative pathways could potentially be regulated, and entertain disagreement about where their assumptions might break down.
My experience was the exact opposite.
The people I spoke to seemed psychologically unable to entertain the possibility that their conclusion (that Al literally kills everyone, which was a point that many would not even budge on) might be wrong.
Their most extreme conclusion was treated as an axiom.
I had multiple people walk out of conversations with me when I questioned their inevitable extinction premise.
At one point during a panel, the moderator asked everyone in the audience who was still skeptical of Al doom to raise their hands. About half the room did. He then told all of the skeptics to leave the panel and go with one of the speakers, who would answer their questions separately. They filtered out all the skeptics, and continued the panel only with the subset who accepted their extreme position.
I genuinely felt like a heretic just for questioning whether superintelligent Al inevitably leads to the extinction of humanity, or entertaining the possibility that the future might actually turn out well.
That does not mean Al safety is fake. Obviously there are serious questions about rapidly advancing Al systems and what happens as they become much more capable. Those are exactly the conversations I went there hoping to have.
But what I encountered was an apocalyptic death cult. These people are not rational. They are deeply afraid, they reinforce that fear in one another, and they have become so emotionally committed to apocalypse
