Northern spotted owls were spared from logging. Now, scientists are making a last stand to save them from a new threat. Learn more: scim.ag/4vq2Y2B
Map of the United States showing the ranges of the barred owl, northern spotted owl, and California spotted owl. Pre-1900, barred owls lived only in the east, but they expanded west in the 20th century, mostly in Canada. In recent decades, barred owls have moved south along the west coast, into forests historically occupied by the northern spotted owl and California spotted owl. Many spotted owls have been displaced in the areas where the spotted and barred ranges overlap, which is most of the spotted owls' ranges. Over the past 5 years, scientists have killed more than 2000 barred owls in Northern California in an attempt to create a spotted owl safe zone.
