It all started on this day. Thank you for a wonderful twenty years.
Text in the center reads: 20 Years Oct. 2006 - Oct. 2026, clarkesworldmagazine.com

(right) Cover art for issue 241 by Marcel Deneuve is "Labyrinths of Azarax" and features a blue and white mechanical eye in a circular opening looking at a small, white, glowing humanoid figure standing on a large pipe in the tunnel. Many pipes line the walls, all heading out to the main room. Pipes are yellow and gray. Room beyond is blue.

(left) Cover art for issue 1 by Tomasz Pietrzyk is "The Town of the Towers" and features a surreal town of yellowy white distorted towers with reddish orange roofs that overhang the towers and rise to a point. Mishapen dark windows and doors are scattered about on the buildings. Orange sky gives the entire piece a warm tone.

i should clarify, when i write people doing bad things, it's because i am bad. they are me. more importantly, when you read about those bad things, they also become you. that's how story works. in fact, you are going to think about murder before this skeet ends. how's that feel, sicko.

FF #28 Story Preview: "In the Wake of Whales" by @clairejiawen.bsky.social Are you up for a story about wondering what's real and also navigating parental disappointment and also environmental restoration with robot celebrities? www.fusionfragment.com/issue-28/
"In the Wake of Whales" by Claire-Jia Wen: the dead, revived by AI / environmentalism / is it him?

Smiling for the hovering drone-cams broadcasting this across multiple systems, you step forward and embrace the Double in the shape of your dead friend. He’s warm; his hand is uncertain against your back. You didn’t hug much when he was alive, so you suppose this ghost-facsimile doesn’t know exactly how to touch you.

second person future tense*: natural, intimate, I'm telling you a story about what we'll be doing together, the future tense markers contract nicely into "i'll" and "you'll" third person future tense: evil. trying to kill me. "[name] will" and "[name]'ll" are like the same amount of intrusive.

Very grateful to see such a kind review and a recommendation for this bleak/weird/ugly story: “Lightspeed’s June issue kicks off in grand style with ‘Ghost in the Tank’ … It’s a vividly told story about a world, and a relationship where every good moment feels stolen, broken, and, eventually, lost.”

"Starvation, isolation, poverty, totalitarianism, inequality—political systems have iterated on solutions to these for centuries without coming to a consensus. It’s a relieving idea, then, that technology can. We had a problem of poverty, so we invented robots; we had a problem of scarcity, so we invented Hextech."

+1 to everything thomas is saying, and also im afraid this kind of vetting might lead to writers having to think about how theyre going to justify+explain their decisions /as/ they're drafting--and that kind of writing defensively isn't good for art

i think people advising that authors are going to be ok because they can explain their creative choices better than a slopper are coming from a good place (and prob mostly right!). but boy do i hate the presumption that writers have to rationally talk through the minutiae of their creative choices.

theres this one tumblr post ive seen talking about that phenomenon but w fiction writing that I think about often
darling of dots feb 24
been stewing on an analytical approach to fiction which call "is this book afraid of me?" and in order to answer this question you determine how hard the book is trying to make sure you don't come after the writer on twitter

the fucked-up part is that specifically notice this in like, BIPOC or queer romances because their authors a) are more likely to be harassed online b) tend to care about writing inclusive and intersectional books more, both of which are totally valid reasons, but unfortunately a book that is scared to be misunderstood is also scared to challenge the reader or allow for too much nuance or grey areas or character flaws and am sorry to say that it often makes for less compelling stories because it means shying away from ambiguities and complexities in an effort to reassure me, the reader, that everyone here is a Good Person engaging in Healthy Behaviours and Relationships
