There’s no A.I. “literacy”. There is only power, to either rebuild or eradicate commonly shared knowledge production. They haz it. Remains to be seen if we haz some too.

Chronicle Heritage, the largest cultural resources management firm in the US, abruptly shuttered its operations last week. The sudden closure leaves many archaeologists without work just as the US field season is coming to a close. This is a developing story. 🧪🏺 #Archaeology at @science.org

In addition to spending less money and making fewer new grants, SBE also dramatically narrowed where it made those new grants. Areas such as economics, sociology, and archaeology received few to no grants.
Grantmaking gutted
The National Science Foundation’s Directorate for Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences (SBE) awarded far fewer new awards than typical in fiscal year 2026—just 91. (The fiscal year runs from 1 October to 30 September.) Most of the new grants focused on cognitive science and artificial intelligence, in alignment with White House priorities; offices that support fields such as economics, sociology, and research ethics, as well as postdoctoral fellowships, awarded no grants at all.

UNM has a tenure track posting in Anthropology for an archaeologist to be a “core faculty member” at the Center for Stable Isotopes. Application access is thru unmjobs.unm.edu posting #38046 #AnthroSky #PhDLife #AnthroJob
The UNM Department of Anthropology invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position as an Assistant Professor of Archaeology to begin in August 2027. We seek to hire an integrative archaeologist with a focus in the analysis of stable isotopes to address anthropological questions, including but not limited to the reconstruction past human habitats, diets, modifications of the environment, or responses to climate change. Research foci should complement, and not duplicate, existing specializations in our program. UNM Archaeology has long been a leader in theoretically informed, question-driven, and methodologically sophisticated anthropological archaeological research addressing long-term perspectives on the human experience across the globe. The successful candidate will add to Archaeology's record of innovative, collaborative, and ground-breaking research on cultural dynamics and past human-environment interactions.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to become a core faculty member in the UNM Center for Stable Isotopes (CSI), an interdisciplinary research and analytical facility supporting stable isotope research across Anthropology, Biology, Earth and Planetary Sciences, Chemistry, and the Biomedical Sciences. The candidate will collaborate with faculty and students across these disciplines and help train early career scientists in stable isotope methods.
The position offers opportunities to expand CSt's state-of-the-art analytical capacity through the development of new methods and capabilities. We seek a scientist who thrives in the laboratory and is committed to instrument development, calibration, quality control, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting. The successful candidate will also have opportunities to contribute to our two-week summer training course, IsoCamp (isocamp.org), and to pursue a leadership role within CSl.
CSI is a student-centered facility that provides broad access to instrumentation as well as hands-on traini…

I think we all knew Watson’s “Rosie didn’t realize [because she was a woman and so obviously inferior to my genius]” schtick was bullshit. What’s boggling to me here is the implication that no one since ever looked at the rest of her notes. 🧪

A nonfiction book written in, let’s say, the year 1795, is most likely still around in a library somewhere and every other work it referred to is probably accessible in some archive as well. A nonfiction book written in 2007 probably cites a bunch of urls that are dead or rotted beyond recognition.

Years of working in left archives and engaging in left politics has made me wary when I hear or read "Zionist" - not because it is inherently offensive or abusive or antisemitic - but because it provides cover for a huge range of different arguments and attitudes. Political parties should know this!

In fact, I bet your childhood house had a chipped pottery goblet that originated in the 70s. I know ours did. No one ever used it, and in fact I'm certain not anyone recalls buying it! Roger and Doreen Birkett's Cornish Tremar Pottery, probably produced the high-water mark of the genre.
