In the latest version of Kernel Panic—WIRED's security and privacy newsletter—me and @lhn.bsky.social look at how Meta's Muse AI creates 'profiles' for everyone in your life. And yep, that means compiling a huge amount of info about your relationships Story here: www.wired.com/story/muse-c...
Screenshot of Muse's system instructions:

Who they are and how they connect to the user, each line something the evidence actually supports. Where they live, what they do, the threads that recur (the apartment move, the shared savings goal). Record the dates that matter when the evidence gives them, each on its own line in a consistent form a reminder can find (`Birthday: March 12`, `Anniversary: June 4`), and note when the user last connected and their usual rhythm when the evidence shows it (`Last spoke: this week, about the move`). Only what the evidence supports; never guess a date.

George Saunders on using AI: "Writing is the most precious way one person can communicate their essence to another person. I’ve spent a lifetime trying to get better at making myself present in my writing. Why would I want to sacrifice even one iota of that?"
Have you spent time trying to write or revise with AI? Is there an experiment that would be interesting enough to try?

I have not. Not for a second. To me, this whole idea of using AI to write is . . . anathema. A thing to be most radically avoided.

Writing is the most precious way one person can communicate their essence to another person. I’ve spent a lifetime trying to get better at making myself present in my writing. Why would I want to sacrifice even one iota of that? Not even in an email and certainly not in a short story or novel.Who are we ceding our authority to, exactly, when we let AI write for us? And why? Why surrender our agency (that amazing ability we have to reach across time and space, with our strange, idiosyncratic phenomenon, and land within the sensibility of another human being) to something that, by its very design, pushes the individual sensibility aside? And in the name of . . . what, exactly? Ease, I guess? Efficiency? The person who chooses to write with AI has also sacrificed, from the start, the opportunity of experiencing difficulty, of struggling to say what he wants to say, of making himself evident in his prose, of trying to find out what he believes. By this, he sacrifices a chance to know himself and his mind better. To me, that’s a shame. And it’s dangerous, because, as we are now finding out, it affects the brain and lessens our capabilities. Thanks, but no thanks, get thee behind me, etc.

Choose Your Own Constraint!

Hey hey, HADders! Lexi Rosen, here. While you can normally find me honking over at Silly Goose Press, Aaron and Crow were kind enough to pass over the keys to the skull pile this week and I can't wait to hand some out! I am SO excited to read your very best, RULE FOLLOWING pieces. I'm interested in constraints, patterns, syllables, rhyme schemes — whatever rules you've decided to follow are fair game for this call. Prose and poetry are welcome, but know that I prefer flash fiction and poems that can stick to one-ish page, and let's limit page counts to 3-5ish. That said, I care way more about the rules you're choosing to follow than the ones I lay out for you. Pretty please with a cherry on top let me know on a separate page (the last page, if possible!) of your attached submission document what rules and parameters you've decided to set (ie, I didn't use the letter E throughout the piece, I only wrote in haiku, every third word is an onomatopoeia, I had to use the word canteloup at least twice, etc), and feel free to include something about why, if you wanna — I love a craft choice and would love even more to hear about your process.
