Also, just noticed THAT guy. I don't want to be the one who says "I always felt he was sketchy". But I always felt he was sketchy. The kind of man who really wants you to know he is thinking the right things and saying the right things. Those guys are always walking red flags.

Sometimes people should be told to maybe stop being SO weird. Like, a bit weird is fine. Even quite a lot of weird is fine. They're being way too weird. (may or may not related to the fact their philosophy is antisocial and rotten to the core)

“Dutch people cycle an average of 2.6km each per day. If this pattern was replicated worldwide, annual carbon emissions would drop by 686 million tonnes. This mammoth figure exceeds the entire carbon footprint of most countries, including the UK, Canada, Saudi Arabia and Australia.” @euronews.com

Cycling like the Dutch would slash the world’s carbon footprint
If everybody cycled like the Dutch, we could offset the UK or Australia’s entire carbon footprint.

Honestly, amazing book. As good for a terminal Nintendo fan like me as it is for someone just vaguely aware that videogames exist

Yesterday night a Tesla parked under my apartment had its alarm blast at ungodly volume every ten minutes. Of course Swedish Police "couldn't do anything" (and scolded me for calling). Every time someone's shitty car becomes my problem I get a bit more radicalized. Fuck all cars.

I am a terrible coder and noticed that too. The best possible use for me is at a single method level, when I need some CS algo that probably exists but I don't know it because I am self taught. All in all, maybe a 20% efficiency gain. Far from the promised magic wand people claim it to be.

A tiny, cheap, e-ink portable console inspired by game and watch with a few pre installed games and an easy to develop system. Like some sort of Nintendo PlayDate with integrated Game Builder Garage.

That feeling when, 7 months into working on a new game that you know it's a fresh new spin on an established genre, someone publishes a trailer of something based on the exact same concept. Gameplay is different but, at a glance, it will look like we copied them. 🥲

when you first start being a parent, you wisely will realize that you should never judge any other parent ever again for whatever it takes to get through the day. It will pass, after a decade, at which point you will develop the finely honed skills of knowing who is just really fucking it up.

I wonder why, as a player, I always end up getting weirdly obsessed with side challenge modes, especially in Capcom games. You know, like the shooting range in RE. Or the challenged in Pragmata. People are like "it's a brief 10 hours game". Is it, when I am trying to 3 stars everything?

100% this, but also... Even if you just play games (don't: read a novel or go to a museum sometimes!), at the very least play many different games. I know some designers who essentially only played dota and CS or overwatch for thousands of hours and then maybe Dark Souls once. Not good.

Metroid Prime 4 is proof that if you mess up the end part of a game everything will feel retroactively worse. And also that you should not force an open world where it's not needed.

when we mourn le guin, we mourn one of our greatest writers & thinkers. but we also mourn one of our all-time greatest haters
All you do is take all the sex out, and use little short words, and little dumb ideas, and don't be too scary, and be sure there's a happy ending. Right? Nothing to it. Write down. Right on.

If you do all that, you might even write Jonathan Livingston Seagull and make twenty billion dollars and have every adult in America reading your book.

But you won't have every kid in America reading your book. They will look at it, and they will see straight through it, with their clear, cold, beady little eyes, and they will put it down, and they will go away. Kids will devour vast amounts of garbage (and it is good for them) but they are not like adults: they have not yet learned to eat plastic.

A lot of the love for "new voices", from what I can see, really just means: horror games with a low-fi, grungy aesthetic and/or viral "dig a hole" type of games.

Marathon *feels* like a single player/co-op roguelike to me, with its focus on missions and the NPC enemies being tough to fight. Also the fact that other squads will almost certainly be aggressive makes them into mini-bosses and (weirdly) ends up making the game less toxic. Also, weird insects.
