Was very happy to beam into QUB today to launch the Africans in Ireland website that I and a number of colleagues have been working on for years. Maps, database, & other resources documenting the African presence in Ireland from the late 16th to early 20th centuries. africansinireland.com

The statement from the Irish president is well, presidential.
"As President of Ireland, I am very conscious
that Ireland and the United States of America
are bound by strong ties. This is a deep
connection, built over centuries, which allows
us to speak openly to one another.
We are in a world facing the existential threat
posed by war and climate change, both of
which are inextricably interlinked.
I conveyed the strong view of the Irish people
that the normalisation of war and genocide can
never be accepted.
As a country which has suffered famine,
colonisation and the violence of the Troubles,
but also the importance of the long and
challenging road to peace, I emphasised the
unique insight which Irish people can bring to
the resolution of conflict.

@jvl.bsky.social Hi. Re what happens if the GOP wins the next election? Well, every time a US commentator says about a government act “this is not who we are”, the entire world will be justified in screaming back “YES IT FUCKING IS”. Apologies in advance for any hurt feelings. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Great podcast btw.

Feminist theory remains undefeated in explaining the weirdest parts of the Trump administration. I'm just going to keep posting this skeleton-key-to-MAGA passage, written over 40 years ago, until everyone gets it.
"To say that straight men are heterosexual is only to say that they engage in sex (fucking exclusively with the other sex, i.e., women). All or almost all of that which pertains to love, most straight men reserve exclusively for other men. The people whom they admire, respect, adore, revere, honor, whom they imitate, idolize, and form profound attachments to, whom they are willing to teach and from whom they are willing to learn, and whose respect, admiration, recognition, honor, reverence and love they desire… those are, overwhelmingly, other men. In their relations with women, what passes for respect is kindness, generosity or paternalism; what passes for honor is removal to the pedestal. From women they want devotion, service and sex.

Heterosexual male culture is homoerotic; it is man-loving.”

Jennifer Nelson’s entry to this year’s Minnesota State Fair crop art
A localized version of Guernica with a loon at the center and a person holding an ICE OUT sign

“My piece was inspired by Picasso's Guernica, a work that was his response to the Nazi's bombing of the Basque town. I thought there was a fitting parallel between these incidents about the high price paid by ordinary people when aggressive regimes try out new tactics of war, as well as a fitting juxtaposition of the darkness of living such an experience and the light we shone through it in our own resistance and care for one another. The patterns near Renee Good and Alex Pretti’s mouths are actually their last words in Morse code: ‘I’m not mad at you,’ and ‘Are you okay?’”

Public opinion swings SHARPLY in favour of the shark.
"We went off fishing for sharks along the coast of Co
Waterford," Mr Achim told 'All About Cork with Paul Byrne', adding that when he landed what was his first-ever Blue Shark, it "lunged" at him.
"I finally managed to land my first Blue Shark and while I was admiring the catch, the catch decided to lunge at my leg and grab my calf," he said.
"It managed to rip part of my calf and do damage that we required special services for."
